"And every mile adds up and leaves a mark on us."
---

After finding what Stiles and I believe is a coyote den somewhere along the Preserve, we leave it to go and find Scott. We nearly collide with him a few feet from it, startling us both since we know there's a coyote out here somewhere.

"Oh!" Stiles exclaims and my heart stutters in my chest.

"I think we found something," I say to Scott.

We lead him back to the den, shining the flashlight inside, illuminating a blue winter coat in the corner. "It's a coyote den," Stiles tells him.

"Werecoyote," Scott corrects and my brow shoots up in shock.

"So, Malia is the coyote?" I ask Scott.

He nods. "I think so," he replies and I release a breath.

Stiles steps inside before I can stop him, along with Scott. I stay outside the den, glancing all around to hoping that the coyote – Malia – won't make any surprise appearances.

"You see this?" Stiles asks, picking up a blue coat inside. "This is Malia's." I see Scott's brow knit in confusion even in the dark. "Remember? It's the same one she was wearing in the photo."

"Guys, you really shouldn't be in there," I say uneasily.

"What do you mean?" Stiles asks.

"She's not gonna come back now," I tell them, glancing over my shoulder for Malia. "You just invaded her home. Your scent's gonna be everywhere."

"If she's not going to come back here, where's she going to go?" Stiles asks.

"I don't know!" I answer honestly. "I don't have a Ph.D. in zoology!"

"Can you track her now?" Stiles asks Scott. "You think you got her scent?"

"Maybe," Scott sighs. "But I'm better at this when I'm a full wolf. And I'm still worried that if I do it, I won't be able to turn back."

I fold my arms over my body tightly as I look at Scott regretfully. "The door's still open," I sigh, knowing that his mental battle was far more prevalent than any physical one he'd endured.

"If I can't get to Derek, we're gonna have to find someone else to help," Scott says and I tilt my head.

Who the hell is gonna do that?

"This is basically a crime scene, right?" Stiles asks, turning to us.

I shrug, gesturing to the coyote den. "I mean, for an animal, maybe," I answer.

"I think it might be a little out of my boss's league," Scott tells him.

"And more in my dad's," Stiles states.
