When you are going to buy a matching ring but you saw his ex-girlfriend.
—
For the first time, I could really tell my boyfriend was upset with me and it hurt. It was all over a small mistake from yesterday. I didn't text or call him the whole day because I was working on a group project with my classmates. It rained that night, too, so I understood why he got so worried.
Plus... the group mostly consisted of boys. Only me and Yuri were the girls. Not that they're untrustworthy or anything we've been working on this project for weeks now. Still, I knew how Jimin's mind worked when it came to things like this. He overthinks. He cares... maybe a little too much.
When I finally got home last night, he was asleep on the sofa. His brows were furrowed, even in his sleep. He didn't even glance at me when I left early for school this morning. That... really stung.
Maybe I shouldn't have brushed it off as a "small mistake." Maybe I should've just called.
Now, here I am, standing in front of a jewelry shop. I know Jimin loves it when I give him things—it makes him unbelievably happy, even if it's small. So maybe, just maybe... a matching ring could patch things up.
As I stepped inside the store, ready to browse, I didn't expect to see her. "Y/N?"
My heart dropped.
Seo-yeon. Jimin's ex.
I wasn't planning on running into her ever again, especially not here. Did she really think I'd forgive her after what she did to him?
She broke his heart like it meant nothing. Said she "fell out of love" when she was never in love with him to begin with. He gave her everything, and she walked away. No wonder Jimin's so cautious now. So sensitive. So guarded.
"Hey, Seo-yeon." I forced a smile. "What are you doing here?" she asked casually. The nerve.
"I'm here to buy a matching ring," I said, scratching the back of my neck. "You?"
"Oh—I'm here for the same thing," she chuckled sweetly. Gross. It wasn't even cute. "You have a boyfriend?" I asked, surprised.
She smiled. "Yup. It's been five months. Thought it was time for a matching ring. You're getting one for Jimin too, right?"
I gave a small nod.
A store clerk approached us. "Ladies, I heard you're both looking for matching rings. Feel free to browse and pick what you like!" I looked at the rings. Most were expensive, but that didn't matter. As long as Jimin liked it.
"Can I see this simple one?" I pointed to a delicate silver band. It wasn't flashy, but it was perfect. "Sure! What's your partner's ring size?" The clerk asked.
Wait—what?
"Excuse me?" I blinked, caught off guard. "Your partner's ring size," she repeated. Crap. I've been dating Jimin for over a year... and I still don't know his ring size?
"Y/N... you don't know Jimin's ring size?" Seo-yeon teased, patting my back with a fake sympathetic smile. "I-I do! I mean... maybe it's the same as mine," I laughed nervously.
Please let it fit.
A few hours later, I finally got home. After a tense but fake-nice conversation with Seo-yeon, my energy was drained. I pushed the door open.
"Jimin?" I called softly.
He wasn't in the living room. When I peeked into our bedroom, there he was sitting at the corner of the bed, looking down at his phone.
My chest tightened. "I-I want to say sorry... for yesterday," I said, lowering my head.
But instead of scolding me, he stood up and pulled me into a tight hug.
"Y/N, I'm sorry too," he whispered. "I know your project is important. I was just... doubting again. And it's not fair to you. I hate how I acted, I ignored you when you did nothing wrong."
I hugged him back, tighter. "It's okay, Jimin. Really." I pulled back slightly and smiled. "Actually, I got something for you today." His eyes lit up immediately. "You did?"
"I bought us matching rings," I said, pulling the small box from my pocket. "A matching ring?" he repeated, smiling as I slipped mine onto my finger and showed him.
"Here, let me put yours on." I slid the other ring onto his finger. It fit. Perfectly. "Wait... it fits?" I gasped. "Oh my god! I guessed right!"
Jimin blinked. "You didn't know my ring size?" I looked away sheepishly. "Yeah... no. But it's the same as my middle finger, look."
I lifted my hand, accidentally flipping him off in the process. "Oops. Sorry." I quickly lowered it, laughing awkwardly. "It's just a simple ring," I said, gently touching his hand. "It's not expensive, but I hope you'll cherish it. I promise I'll buy us a fancier one when I get my allowance—"
He cut me off, cupping my cheek with a soft smile. "I'll cherish anything you give me. Expensive or not. All I care about is being with you." He leaned in and kissed me, light and warm.
I didn't tell him I saw Seo-yeon today. He didn't need that memory resurfacing.
I just wanted him to be happy. That's what his parents asked of me, after all.
To love him.
To protect him.
To give him the happiness he once lost.
But the truth is... I'm not doing this because they asked me to. I'm doing this because I love him more than anything.
