Katherine's POV
I left the great hall retaining tears.
But to my surprise, I could even say there was more people outside. Most of them snogging, giggling. A couple girls crying.
But I was not going to be in the crying gang.
I hurried to the courtyard. I spotted a seat and walked up to it when I saw karkarof and snape talking, as if they didn't want anyone to hear them. They were in one of the entrances to the courtyard, so I walked away from it, hiding behind a bush in hope to get a glimpse of the conversation. I stayed there, but a hand on my shoulder startled me. I jumped slightly but was able to not make a sound.
"I want to be alone Harry" I whispered taking Harry's hand off my shoulder.
"And I want to talk-" He said firmly, but was pulled down in the same kneeling position as me, shutting him up.
"Shh! I have a feeling snape and karkarof don't want us to hear their little conversation, so if you don't mind, let me find out what they are talking about" I said, looking back at them.
"I don't want this night to be ruined for you because of me" he said, moving his head into my vision.
"You are kind of getting there" I looked at him in the eyes. Though it wasn't the same way I do usually. But I couldn't figure out in what 'way' it was. I gave up and stood up, hurrying to the girls bathroom.
"Just let me explain!" He pleaded, taking my arm.
"I already did!" I yelled turning to look at him "I already did and you couldn't say anything, so please, leave. Me. Alone." I said as I entered the girls bathroom, getting out of his grip.
I was pretty sure he was in the door waiting until I came out, but I didn't care, I sat on the floor and started letting my tears ricochet onto my cheeks, ruining my makeup.
A part of her made her feel stupid: 'you aren't the second option, he wanted to ask you first.' The other one was even worse: he also likes her, he also wanted to go with her, you aren't the only girl he would've liked to dance with there.
Tears of mascara streaming down her face on the bathroom floor. She had never fallen this low, and for a boy? Pathetic.
She didn't understand why she felt like this. She thought this would be a more "going as friends" thing. So why was she so drunk in this pain? Why did she want to curse his name when he was nothing more than the rest? She was nothing more than the rest. She was his friend, that's it.
All this just to find the light of the way out by realizing she doesn't want him like a friend, but to be honest, who would want those beautiful green eyes that made you get lost in as a friend? Or that heartwarming smile while he laughs at his own jokes or his warm touch that keeps you from the cruel cold when you need it?
She didn't want him as a friend. But she couldn't have him as anything more. They were friends, their relationship was strictly platonic. Why ruin that?
After what felt like ten minutes, She stood up and washed her face. Her makeup was screwed up, but she managed to fix it a little before leaving. Once she looked a bit more decent to walk outside, she took a peek through the door to make sure Harry wasn't outside. And he wasn't. She didn't want him there anyway, so why did it hurt a little? Of course he wasn't going to wait fifteen minutes outside in the cold for her.
She put herself together and walked to her common room, not hurrying her steps. A part of her wanted to see if he was somewhere outside waiting for her and just not by the door. Maybe he was figuring out what Snape and Karkarov were talking about. Maybe he had taken a walk. Or maybe he was right behind her. But she couldn't get herself to look back.
After a couple minutes, already in her pajamas, laying on her bed, Hermione entered the room, also crying with her heels in hand.
"Hey are you okay?" I asked with concern on my tone, sitting down and putting my hand on her shoulder as she sat on the edge of my bed.
"Yeah, just... Ronald being stupid as always" she said, sniffing a bit. After a couple seconds she looked up "what about you? It's not midnight yet"
"Ronald being stupid as always too" I chuckled "Harry invited Cho Chang before asking me and, well, it slipped from his mouth"
"I'm sorry, how are you?" She asked, laying next to me.
"Fine, they are just boys right?" I said, also laying down.
"Just boys" she repeated with a tiny smile. Hermione placed her head on my shoulder and started untying her hair.
