...
michael pulled down his sleeves for the fifth time that morning.
"don't worry, kitten, you'll be fine." luke cooed, softly, "I'll be right in this spot at three, okay? you'll make friends, trust me."
turns out there was a special school which integrated humans and furries into one school. luke signed michael up for it around a month ago, and today was michael's first day.
he walked into class with his backpack slung over his shoulder. the class was almost full, and so he was forced to sit considerably close to the front of the room and next to another furry.
the bell hadn't rung yet, and so the female furry turned to michael and smiled.
"hey, there." she greeted. michael flashed her a quick smile, waving with one of his sleeve-covered hands. he glanced at her long enough to know what she looked like. a blonde. golden ears and tail. and she looked way too old to be in this class. like, at least seventeen or eighteen.
"I'm britt." she said, not shy at all. "we're the only furries in this class I think." she murmurs, looking around. michael looks around too, and sees that she is right. no one else in class has ears nor a tail. they all looked around michael's age, maybe older.
"you are?" she asked.
"oh, sorry, uh," michael stuttered, glancing back towards the girl. "michael."
she smiles again, then suddenly her eyes go wide.
"you're the kit in my group!" she says. michael tilts his head to the side.
oh yeah, her. he remembers her now. she was talkative and annoying.
michael smiled, "I remember you."
the bell rung, and the teacher stepped in. a short man who looks like he hasn't shaved in eighteen years.
"right, then," he says, "let's get started with todays lesson. turn to page 23 in your textbooks and..."

michael slammed his locker shut and huffed to his next class. school sucked. he would rather be in bed with luke watching a movie.
he bumped into britt.
"oh, hey!" she exclaimed.
all throughout history class britt blabbered on about her life.
"...so, I was dropped off when I was ten by my parents. said they couldn't care for me anymore, plus I was almost at that age where we had to take the test and be shipped off."
michael was one of the lucky kits who didn't get attached to his biological parents before he had to be taken away. at age thirteen, furries would have to take a test which would determine their rank.
there are higher scores, which experts call 'alphas', and lower ones. they vary from 'betas' to 'omegas' (omegas being the lowest rank.)
if you score omega, you get taken from your parents and get stuck into one of those 'sanctuaries.' you're kept there until you're adopted and that's that. it's rumored that some furries stay there, growing old until they die, or they eventually go feral and kill themselves. if omegas do get adopted, though, it's more likely that they would just be a regular house servant. they would get a small room, no questions asked, and would do all of the cleaning up in the house and whatnot.
if you score a beta you're basically stuck in the middle and either the experts choose where you ought to go and what privileges you have. they say you get a chance at getting the alpha 'benefits' but beta's almost always end up in an omega's position. which makes the 'beta' title totally meaningless.
if you score alpha, which is extremely, extremely unlikely you are able to do so much more. alphas are given special privileges. they're given a home right away, with a dominant, of course. alphas get a whole lot of lee-way when it comes to how dominate they can be. they can talk back to their owners without getting reported, and they do. they're known to have the most outgoing personality - which is, I guess, attractive to 'older' people - and to be more a little more dominant than usual furries. alphas who get adopted are only adopted if they're being used for sex. no sugar-coating. they get a big room and lots of luxuries and whatever. it's like buying a fuck-buddy or boyfriend/girlfriend.
michael didn't know any alphas personally, and he sure wouldn't want to. they're stereotyped as cocky and rude.
but michael never got to take the test anyway, so he wouldn't know if he was an omega, beta or alpha. frankly, he didn't care. when his dad dropped him off at the sanctuary when he was one the experts immediately categorized him as omega and put him in that group. and it would be pointless to take the test once he turned thirteen because he was already adopted by calum by then.
calum.
michael hadn't been thinking about him lately. he pulled out his phone and checked his dm's on twitter. he had four messages from him.
'baby boy, come home now.'
'I'm getting upset that you're not responding, michael.'
'don't you miss me?'
'darling, I have a big surprise for you x.'
michael closed up his phone and put it back into his pocket, then proceeded to walk to his next class, chemistry.

luke was right where he promised at three.
"hey, princess. how was it?" he asked as they were driving home.
"boring." michael answered truthfully.
luke chuckled.
"let's go home and watch a movie."
