The drive to Hawkins Lab was filled with anxiety for Ally. The entire time, the girl simply couldn't seem to stop her leg from shaking. It was like a nervous twitch that no matter how hard she tried to calm down, just wouldn't go away.

The girl sat awkwardly between Hopper and Eleven, too focused on the thought of going back to the bad place to take much note of the blanket of tension coating the air between the other two in the truck.

"So, what, we're just not gonna talk about it, huh?" Hopper suddenly spoke up.

"About what?" The girls questioned in unison, one genuinely confused and the other still slightly annoyed with her guardian.

"Oh, I don't know, I'm just curious, you know, why all of a sudden you both look like some kind of MTV punks," he said.

El looked away, turning her gaze to the scenery passing by the window and laying a hand on Ally's shaking leg to get it to stop.

"Did I not always look like that?" Ally scoffed.

"Fair enough," Hopper acknowledged.

Noticing the other girl's silence, Hopper spoke again.

"I'm not mad, kid," he added, "I just wanna know where you've been. That's all."

Ally reached for El's hand and gave it a squeeze, silently telling her that it was safe to tell the truth.

"To see Mama," El finally answered.

"Okay... how'd you get there?"

"A truck," El answered shortly.

Oh, shit.

"A truck?" Hopper repeated, with growing concern and slight frustration.

"A big truck," El clarified.

"You know, it wasn't that big. It was more of a—"

Ally's attempt to lighten up the situation was cut off by Hopper's increasing vexation.

"A big truck? Whose truck was it?" He asked, looking to Ally with an angry, chiding glare as he was experiencing every parent's worst nightmare.

"A man's," El informed.

Ally cringed, hoping that El would stop talking.
