This was it. It was the big day. Dustin was finally coming back home after an entire month at science camp and his friends couldn't wait to surprise him.

While Dustin was away, Ally had promised to go in and feed his turtle, Yertle, every day. So, naturally, Mrs Henderson — who absolutely adored Ally and was now very much accustomed to the girl's presence in her home — was happy to let them sneak into her house to throw Dustin a surprise party.

That morning, Ally had woken up full of energy and was so very ready to see her friend. She'd thrown on some clothes — a large dark green shirt and jean shorts that were being held up by a belt, all of which had once belonged to Steve — shoved her sock-clad feet into her combat boots, grabbed her leather jacket and was out of the house without even stopping for breakfast.

Ally biked to Hopper's cabin to fetch El, excited to spend some time with her sister — even if it was just for the duration of the fairly short ride to Dustin's house. It would be the most time alone she'd spent with her sister all summer.

When she reached the cabin, Ally threw open the door, ready to do the little sing-song call that she did every time she entered.

"Honeyyy! I'm ho— Wheeler?"

"Oh, hey, Ally," Mike greeted cheerfully with a wave and a smile from where he stood, exiting El's room.

Ally narrowed her eyes, turning her head towards where Hopper sat on his Lay-Z-Boy.

"What the hell is he doing here?" Ally whisper-shouted through gritted teeth.

"Besides getting on my last nerve?" Hopper quipped, Ally sensing that he was really trying to hold himself back judging by his hard, gravelly tone of voice.

"Ally!" El exclaimed excitedly, leaving her room and skipping over to give her sister a hug.

"Hey, El!" Ally greeted back with a smile, awkwardly hugging back, "What's going on?"

El pulled away, gravitating back to Mike's side, wrapping herself around his arm.

"Didn't she tell you?" Mike asked, moving towards the exit with El before turning back to Ally.

"Mike is fetching me," El explained, eyes still bright and sparkling like a cartoon character.

"I thought I was fetching you?" Ally recalled.

Hopper stood up quickly, staggering over to Ally's side.

"You know, Ally's right," the man interjected eagerly, keen on getting his daughter to spend some time with someone who wasn't Mike, "You already said you'd ride with her. It'd be rude to cancel and break your promise."

El frowned slightly, looking to Mike. The boy seemed unfazed, his joyful mood and elated smile not even wavering.

"Don't even worry about it," he insisted, waving her off, "I got this. Maybe you can give her a ride back, though?"
