You know that theory about your body replacing itself every seven years? Human cells grow and die, and replace themselves with new ones, a tiring process that lasts until the day you die.

Eda was never particularly interested in biology, and she wasn’t even sure if that seven-years myth was true, but that information suddenly came to her mind, while he stood next to her, asking the question that she was not ready to answer.

Anyhow, if that was true, that means that not a single cell in her body was familiar with Serkan’s touch. Her skin is apparently, brand new, and Eda wanted do shed out of her skin, and go back to the old one. The one that held Serkan’s kisses, Serkan’s gazes, Serkan’s love.

Seven years without him. But he was there, inside her head, her mind, her soul. In every thought, in every move, in every breath she took…. He was there.

Eda finally raised her head and looked at him, her handsome boy that was now a man, who was staring at her, waiting for an answer.

Eda gulped as she thought about one certain day, three specific knocks on her door and a person that she hated most in the world.

“Almost 50 percent of all marriages in Turkey ends in divorce or separation. We fell in that group. It’s simple as that”, Eda stated robotically and cold, which caused Serkan to look at her in shock.

“Marriage has become a farce these days, I see. People promise to God that they will love each other forever, they put rings on each other”, Serkan said as he stared at her ring finger, “and then they leave just like that.” “Something sacred turning into a joke. Why is that, Eda?”, he asked her, his sharp gaze burning her body.

“Maybe people just fell out of love, Serkan”, Eda replied sharply, wanting to hurt him, to make him feel her nonexistent indifference.

Being in his proximity was overwhelming her, and just wanted him to leave, so she could finally be alone in her bitterness and misery.

Serkan surprised her when he grinned, almost as he expected her defensive reply.

He took a step towards her, alarming her, and Serkan tilted down his head towards her ear.

“Of all of the dates you could have held your first exhibition, you choose this specific one. You’re wearing my dress, and all of your pieces are screaming my name. And last but not least, your heavy breathing makes me think that you’re disturbed by my proximity”, Serkan rasped in her eat, noticing the chills on her arms, making him smirk in a cocky way.

“Other people may fall out of love, but you are definitely not one of them, Eda. I am not going to leave before you tell me why you left me”, he said, making Eda angry as hell.

He was right, and she hated it. She hated his stupid scent, his stupid eyes, his stupid words and his stupid three-day-beard. Eda hated even more her rapidly-beating heart, and the way her body reacted to his closeness. She hated her stupid ex-husband, whose fingers were lightly caressing her arm.

“Speaking of the dates”, Serkan whispered, his lips touching her earlobe, while her lips quivered, and her whole body trembled.

“Happy anniversary, karicim”, he said and turned around, his hand leaving the pocket, and the glint of his wedding ring on his finger shocking Eda, making her stand there frozen.

He was still wearing the ring! Why was he still wearing the ring? That damn ring, the cheapest they could find, the ring they bought after selling all of their jewelry.

Eda will go crazy, she was sure of it, as she watched him walking around the gallery, like he owned the place.

Weird mix of emotions were hitting her like a storm, and she didn’t know what or how to feel.

She took a couple of deep breaths, fixed her bangs and moved towards him, sliding her gaze towards the piece on the wall.

“Ah, Eda. You are not the only one with the secrets”, Serkan said mysteriously, while Eda mostly ignored that, her mind going far away from this disastrous night, and went to a much happier place.

Eda paced in her room, furious after another fight with her parents. Their agenda against Serkan was tiring her, day after day the same words could be heard in Yildiz’s household.

“You are too young”, “Plenty of time for dating in college”, “He is a bad influence”, “His world is different than yours”, “You don’t belong there”,
“He is just not the right guy for you”, “We are your parents, we know what’s best for you”, were things they said at the beginning of their relationship.

But now, when the end of high school is approaching, their propaganda was getting worse and worse.

Last few weeks, they constantly harassed her to meet the son of one of their friends, a guy that already had a stable job and prospective future.

Eda constantly refused, but this night, her parents crossed the line. They invited him and his parents to dinner, and Eda had to bite her tongue during the whole night.

When they finally left, she had a huge fight with her parents, which ended with just one sentence from her father.

“Either you marry him, or consider yourself homeless. The choice is yours, Edacim.”

And now she was there, crying her soul out, trying to think how to get herself out of this shitty situation.

She thought about Serkan, and how he would feel about all of this.

Eda didn’t understand what is so wrong about two young people whose only crime is their consuming love for each other.

After getting nowhere near to the solution, Eda groaned and fell heavily on her bed.
