What happens when you put all the clichès in the world in one chapter?

You get this!

It was a warm November day in Istanbul and Eda found herself sitting on a swing, slightly moving, while the wind played with her hair.

Kids from her sokak were playing football around her, and every now and then, a kid would call for her to see a new trick they just made up.

‘Eda abla’ would smile at each one of them, but even the kids knew that something was wrong with her.

Something was missing in her eyes, a sparkle or something, and the pure grin that she always wore was replaced with a small sad barely- there smile.

It was unusual to see Eda without her loyal companion, her very own Sancho Panza.

But they were rarely seen in public even before Eda left for America, and all the nosy neighbors wanted to know why.

Eda turned her head to the left and in just few seconds, her eyes found both their names on the swing.

Eda and Serkan together forever

Eda smiled bitterly at the naivety that they both had during these years.

And the memories like always, came to punch her in the gut, to make her even worse for what she lost.

This playground specifically is a special place for both of them, because that place was the place where Serkan gave her the most important item she had, her star-shaped necklace.

She closed her eyes and saw a boy with a huge grin on his face and a shy girl with tears in her eyes, with him placing her necklace around her neck.

That day she promised herself that she would never take it off.

One of the many promises she broke…

Eda touched her bare neck, and sensing his gaze, she slowly opened her eyes to see a boy who is now a man, walking slowly towards her with a regretful expression on his face.

She stared at him while he approached and turned her gaze while he sat next to her, struggling with fitting in there.

Usually, she would laugh at him for that, because once upon a time, he couldn’t even reach the ground with his feet, but now, there is a man beside her, a man who broke her heart in many ways.

Laughing will not be an action for today.

Today was reserved for bitterness and regret.

After a few moments of silence, Serkan decided to start the conversation, knowing for months that it would hurt him.

“I thought I would find you here.”

Eda looked at him and noticed the small changes; his hair was more stylized, and his beard was longer, finally leaving the ‘two haired beard’ faze.

They stared at each other for a while, trying to find something in their eyes, the love that they shared for each other, and still share.

Too bad, because they mastered the poker face, hiding their emotions perfectly.

“He is so handsome” Eda thought and immediately broke their eye contact, trying to find something else to look at.

“That is strange” Eda said with a distant voice.

“You looking for me.”

Serkan sighed. Oh how much he wanted to go back to the simpler times, where they didn’t hurt each other.

But this was his fault anyway.

“I would always look for you, Eda. And I would always find you too. Because that is what we do for each other. We are best friends” Serkan said while he looked at her, his hands itching to fix her long hair.

“Were. We were best friends.”

Years of knowing Eda, millions of silly fights they had, and this is the first time he hated her words.

He used to never get tired of her talking to him.

He would listen to everything she says, because everything that came from her was important to him.

Maybe he daydreamed too much, but he always hoped that the day she came back, she would forgive him for his foolish behavior and she would run to his arms, like she used to do.
