I'm so glad that we finally got a chance to have our girls night out. We've been talking about this for what—two months now? I say to the girls the moment the waitress arrives with our drinks. Maybe even longer. Diane adds as she brings the icy strawberry margarita up to her mouth.
Dipping a tortilla chip into the bowl of delicious guacamole, Elaina jumps in to say. I almost didn't make it tonight. It's hard enough getting Nicky's father to take him on the weekends, let alone on a Thursday night. Exactly how did you get him to stay with Nicky on a weekday? I asked. I didn't have to do or say anything other than ask. Shocker right? I'll say. Maybe he's changing his ways. I replied. Or maybe he just decided not to be an asshole for once, and give you the much needed break that you deserve! Diane comments. Anyway—is anyone going to ask why I asked the both of you to come out tonight? Diane says with a big smile. Why did you ask us out? Elaina replied. Diane giggles then lifts her hand up to reveal a beautiful diamond ring. I'm engaged! And I want you both to be my bridesmaids! That's great news Diane, and yes! We'll be your bridesmaids.
Standing here, holding on to my friends, I can't help but to momentarily replace this happy moment with sadness over Lucas. I can't help it. It was not that long ago, Lucas and I were planning our forever too. I couldn't control the tears that came after Diane and Elaina pulled away from our hug. Chy, is everything okay? Diane asked. Yes! I'm just happy for you Diane. This is such a big deal and I can't wait to help with the planning. Thank you for saying so Cheyenne, but those tears look like something else to me. It's Lucas. Elaina turns to tell Diane. Diane looks surprised at the mention of his name. Didn't the two of you break up a while ago? She asked. We really shouldn't get into this now. I suggested as I flag down the waitress for another drink. We just found out that you're engaged! So let's forget about me and celebrate, ok? Not a chance Chy! Besides, we'll have plenty of time for celebrations. Remember...I still have my engagement and bachelorette party coming up. she says, and winks her eye.
Spill Cheyenne! Diane demands. Well—I spoke with Lucas's mom earlier this week, and she informed me that he was leaving for New York. To live? Diane asks. Yes—his older brother got him a job out there. He's really leaving, and I might never see him again. I tell them as I struggle to keep myself from breaking down. I'm so sorry to hear that Cheyenne. For a while there, I really felt that the both of you had something special. We did, but it wasn't meant to be. Our lives are leading us down different paths, and there was just too much drama surrounding the both of us. Can I ask you something? Of course Diane. You can ask me anything. I remind her. Do you love Lucas? I take a sip of my margarita, think about the question, and begin to spill all of my true feelings.
At first, I used to think that I just liked spending time with Lucas. Because he made me feel so special and beautiful. Now, I know it's more than that. I love everything about him. I love how he behaves around Sofie, and how quick he is to step in and help me with her. I love how focused he can be, and how quick he is to help other people. I love how sweet and kind he is, and how he was always smiling. Mostly, I love how he loved me. So yeah—I love him. I love him so much. And I hate the possibility that he might believe that I never did.
Uhm—am I missing something here? Because now I'm wondering why the both of you broke up in the first place. I had no choice, Diane. He was about to give up good opportunities just to be with me, and I wasn't going to allow it. Well—I'm not sure if my opinion matters, but you should go see him before he leaves. Tell him everything you've told us. Trust me, you'll regret it if you don't. Isabella had said the same thing to me during our lunch date yesterday. She had come down on me pretty hard and confessed that she was disappointed in me. But why doesn't anybody understand that it's because of love that I'm choosing to stay away.
Elaina hands me a shot of tequila and sighs. Chy, you need closure. Talk to him before he leaves. Don't let him move to New York thinking that you never cared for him. It's too late girls. I say just before downing the shot of tequila. It's never too late! Diane exclaimed. Well he's leaving tomorrow, so yeah, it kind of is. If Lucas is leaving tomorrow, then what the hell are we still doing here? Elaina yells. Even if I did go see him, what am I supposed to say? You'll figure it out! Diane says and flags down the waitress for the bill.
As Elaina and Diane yell into traffic, I remind myself that I haven't spoken to Lucas in almost two months. This will surely be a awkward situation. Even at the restaurant, during the engagement party, he had his brother order his drink. He couldn't and wouldn't say a single word to me. Okay—we're here! Diane informs me. I roll my window down and look towards the house, but it looks dark and empty. I don't think anyone is here. I say to Diane. Heck Cheyenne! Do we have to do everything? Go up there and check! Because we didn't drive out here for nothing.
It took me two minute and thirty two seconds to exit the car and start making my way up the stairs. I could easily vomit, and as I reach the top, my stomach begins to hurt. I take a deep breath. I really shouldn't of followed those three margaritas with that shot. I internally scold myself. I ring the doorbell once, and wait a few seconds before ringing it again. Nothing. No one answers and the inside continues to remain dark. I don't think anyone is here! I shout from the top of the stairs. Ring the bell one more time! Elaina yells. But I ignore her suggestion and start making my way back to the car.
As I'm about to step into the car, I hear a voice behind me call out my name. I turn as the panic sets in, and sure enough, Lucas is standing a few steps away from the car. Hi Lucas. Diane says. Hey Diane—how are you? He asks but continues to stare at me. Oh we're good, but we'll be even better if you wouldn't mind giving Cheyenne here a few minutes. She's has something important to say. He doesn't say a word. He just continues to stand in front of me and stares as if he's seen a ghost. Okay—we're leaving now. Call us if you need a ride, Chy. I can't believe that these two are actually going to leave me here with Lucas. I am going to fucking kill them come tomorrow.
