Time lapse: 4 years (Elena 3 almost 4 Kyle 13th birthday weekend)
"I'm home!" Kyle called up the stairs, he was usually later than this, I had no idea whe he did in the way home, but it was something which seemed to take a lot of time, as school was finished by three, Gerard and I were home by four - Gerard was often home before me - and it was usually almost five when he was home.
"Hey buddy." I smiled lifting Elena onto my shoulders as she rambled on about shit which made no sense like she usually did, she was just like Gerard, she liked to share everything, everything being, everything which happened, everything she saw heard or dreamed. "Oh hey Alex." I smiled walking into the living room seeing he had brought Alex home with him again.
"Where's Dad?" He asked dropping his bag and shoes by the door, taking Alex's bag from her and letting her slip her shoes off next to his.
"Uh, in the art studio I guess." I smiled, at him and Alex as he turned on the television, making Elena squeal and wriggle around, waving her arms around.
"Me, me, me." She begged, pointing to Alex and Kyle on the couch. "I wanna play!" She wriggled more until I lifted her down onto the couch next to Kyle.
"Be nice to Alex." I chuckled, smiling kindly at Alex and making sure Elena was careful, she had a thing for not payin enough attention and being creless, spilling things, trashing things, hurting people unintentionally, it was all okay until she annoyed Kyle, then all hell broke loose and it was world war three in the house. Usually that ended in Elena crying, Kyle pissed off, Gerard trying to tell Kyle to take it easy, Kyle snapping back at Gerard, Gerard getting pissed off, yelling at Kyle then storming into his art studio, Kyle storming to his bedroom and me and Elena left in the middle of the house while I tried to work out how it managed to escalate from Elena tripping over Kyle's foot to Gerard and Kyle hating each other for two minutes.
However Gerard going to his art studio was like a magic trick, he would be gone for five minutes at most, before he would come back and he would apologize to me, because he knew I hated when they argued and when they yelled, tell me he was sorry and he loved all three of us very much. Then he would go upstairs and find Kyle, they would talk for a while before they would both forgive each other and they'd be best friends again, teasing me together and back to their usual relationship.
Honestly Gerard and Kyle's relationship was unbelievably good for step-dad and son, they were literally like best friends and it mademe so happy to see. It was amazing to see that they really did love each other, like a father son relationship, only it wasn't quita a father son relationship, it was more childish, thye were like two sixteen year old boys only Gerard was a little older than sixteen and Kyle was a little younger. They acted like two teenage boys, but then they acted like father and son too, they cruely teased and made fun of me a lot, they seemed to make many sexual jokes, which I blamed Gerard for - Kyle was fucking twelve - and they wrestled twenty-four seven. But Gerard knew when was the time for fun and games and when was the time for seriousness and when he needed to he was very authoritive and he was certainly a very good father figure, telling Kyle sternly when he was wrong and congratulating him proudly when he achieved something. In all honesty, I was like a fucking mother and Gerard was like a father, but I was certainly a lot more immature than a mother, I worried like one though, there was no denying that.
There was no way I was like a mother in any other way though, I worried that was it, I worked more than Gerard, school was almost eight hours a day, he went to New York once a week when he ran scripts with his agent, but most of the time he was in his studio. Maybe he deserved more credit actually, he worked very very hard, but he certainly procrastinated, but he was able to, his work wasn't as demanding, until he realized he had three weeks of work to do for a dead line a week and a half away. Ignoring that fact I still wasn't the mother figure a child needs, I could be protective and stereo-typical like, but I wasn't, I was laid back - more than a mother, but less than Gerard - definitely immature and probably a little innappropriate,. But they say the stricter the parents the more rebellious the kid, at least that would imply Kyle and Elena weren't going to be rebellious.
