I - 29 Under pressure

Pete

Still no news. Neither from Pol nor from Arm.

During his call, Pol had given me all the information on the attack on the alcohol shipment. I then warned Kim that her merchandise was going to be stolen the same evening.

Arm himself followed the one all my hopes of finding Vegas lies on. Until now I had no idea where they had gone.

I stayed alert, waiting for any news.

Pol

Our mission was to attack two trucks at the town's entrance. I climbed with the others into a truck covered with a tarpaulin which took us to the site of the ambush. We put tire studs on the road and hide on either side of it. I was hidden on the lower side with two other armed men who looked like thugs. I started to talk to them.

- Hey guys, were you recruited on the docks too? Do you know who the guys we work for are?

- Why are you asking so many questions? one of them told me.

- I like to know where I step. I answered him.

- Look, I don't know any more than you. I was recruited the same day as you by the construction manager and he only told me there's a great deal of money to be made.

- Oh, I saw the chef! Said the other man. Two days ago when I was going to the manager"s office to ask if there was some work I saw him talking with a man who had a strong foreign accent. Both were speaking in English and I did not understand what they were talking about but this guy who usually talks to all of us like shit practically licked this guy's boots.

His colleague says to him:

- Yeah, well you should learn to shut your mouth for a bit. And the chat ended there.

At that moment we heard on the walkie-talkie

- They're coming !

I saw in the distance the headlights of two approaching trucks. I didn't know how I was going to behave, should I fight my own colleagues?

Suddenly, I saw that the trucks had just stopped near the trap we had set for them. It seemed to me that men were getting out of the trucks and throwing pistol shots in direction of the sky.

Suddenly the smoke bombs illuminated us as if we were in broad daylight. Gunfire and machine gun shots were beginning to rain down on us. Several men were injured or killed as the others ran away.

In the middle of the battle, I spotted the man who a few moments earlier told me about his meeting with the man I considered the mastermind of the whole operation. With the palm of my hand I knocked him out with a blow on the back of the neck. I then put him onto my shoulder and headed towards my colleagues. Arrived a few meters from them I shouted :

- Hey it's me Pol, don't shoot and join them

Arm

I followed Uan through the crowd. He was with two men I did not know.

I took every possible precaution not to be spotted.

After about ten minutes I saw him rush into the garden of a large villa surrounded by high stone walls.

I had to find a place to watch the entrance of the house without being noticed. After a moment I spotted a recess covered by stones in which I was hiding. From there I had a perfect view on the entrance. I took my phone to warn Pete, but I noticed at that moment my battery was dead. 

- Shit!!!!

What should I do ? Leaving to make Pete knows about that place ? Stay hidden?

I decided to go back to Pete because we weren't very far from where I had left him. And given the late hour, the hideout could last all night.

Coming out of my hiding place I noticed a kid playing on the sidewalk. I came to him.

- Hey kid, would you do me a favor? I slipped some money into his hand.

- I have to go for a while, can you watch if someone leaves this house the time I come back and you will have more money.

- Ok. Said the kid, bright eyes fixed on his hand.

Macau

I jumped from my bed when I heard someone scream loudly. I came out of my room and tried to know where the noise was coming from. It was New's room. I walked in and saw him holding his head in his hands. I approached and sat on his bed.

- How are you ? Why are you screaming like that?

- I have a headache. He looked up at me and suddenly he grabbed me by the arms and he said:

- It's coming back to me little by little Macau, it wasn't them into the car!

Then he hugged me tight. My heart was pounding and I didn't understood nothing.

Pete

Following the instructions of Arm, who was going to take over from me in a few hours, I came in front of the villa. I saw the kid who was sitting on the edge of the sidewalk, staring at the house.

- It's ok, I've come on behalf of my friend to give you more money. Did you see anyone come out?

- No one.

- It's good thank you. I say, slipping more money into his hand. He got up very happy and left,"I'll buy some candy" he told me.

Arm told me about a great place to watch over the villa without being seen. I walk into it and leaned against the wall to wait.

The night was calm, no one moved in the villa. I took a cigarette to pass the time. I thought nothing would happen until morning.

Suddenly I heard the sound of footsteps on the asphalt. Somebody was coming from one side of the villa, yet I had walked around and seen no other exit except the entrance.

I leaned back into my hideout place not to be seen. Suddenly a light came on in one of the upstairs rooms. The stranger rushed into my hideout and looked up at the light. What should I do? In a moment I would be spotted! Was he a member of the gang who hid in this villa?

I put my hand in my pocket to take out the switchblade I had brought with me. I silently dropped my cigarette.

It was a furtive noise but the stranger seemed to notice I was there. He turned back to me and looked at me.

The knife fell from my hands. It was him, I had found him!
