✔Chapter 34 // Fighter

How did it come to this?

Leah got up from the jungle floor covered in blood with her machete in her hand, the blade was also crimson. She looked at her red hands, she was shaking. Something was on her face and she touched it to check what it was. More blood. In the background, Jungkook ran to her and was talking to her persistently, but she couldn't focus.

How did this happen?

Well, that day started as it normally did. Namjoon, Jungkook, and her had breakfast, then she put cream on the youngest's arm. The cream would be enough for maybe two or three days more, and it would be perfect because he didn't need more than that. Namjoon was ecstatic about his second day of physiotherapy with Ella, though the previous session had proven extremely hard for him. Despite his pain, he was pumped to push through it.

If she recalled correctly, it started because Jungkook was impatient. They had to wait until a priest came to tattoo him, which would take at least two days according to Ella. Leah thought she could then collect some plants and make medicine since she'd have time to spend, or even train a bit with Jungkook. But he was impatient, so they went to talk with Daniel. He was in his office speaking about Lamar over the phone when he saw them. He explained Lamar was away on a mission, which justified why they hadn't seen him since he trained them two days before. Jungkook asked about the priest and Daniel confirmed what Ella had said. Jungkook didn't want to just wait two days, he wanted to leave now and start the search for a radio. Daniel suggested they participate in an assault on an outpost, to which Jungkook said no. He didn't want to shoot people, and Leah agreed. Also, after hearing how the northern village had lost most of its men in an assault, she just didn't want to risk something so dangerous. Daniel was disappointed because he saw in them "a true warrior fire", but didn't insist and allowed them to leave the village in the eastern direction. He warned them that after the river it would be significantly less safe and for them to pay extra attention.

And that's how instead of training or making medicine, Leah and Jungkook ended up leaving Omani village. She was convinced she could search for some plants that Ella wanted and he wanted to get an idea of how that part of the jungle was. He preferred to do it slowly but surely, than not at all.

It all went fine at first. After one hour they were at the river, then they passed it. Leah stayed as close to Jungkook as possible, only stopping occasionally when she saw a plant that could be interesting. Then on one of those times, she saw one of the plants Ella needed, the one supposed to be the most common. Yet, she told her to always pick up some, as a lot of quantity was required to make the infusion that had painkiller properties. She had to stop once, twice, and by the third time, Jungkook didn't even mind it anymore and just continued walking a few meters further.

He noticed it too late, however. While Leah was crouching on the floor picking up a few plant branches with her machete, Jungkook heard a noise. He was trying to figure out where it came from when all of a sudden he saw a heavy fast shadow charging forward in his direction. He didn't think, his first instinct was to get out of its way and in this case by holding a tree branch over him and pulling himself up. Only then did he realize the mistake he had just made.

It all happened extremely fast. He let himself fall and yelled her name loudly as a warning. She was so focused on her things, that all she had time to do was turn around and see a boar her size charging fast at her. It was so close to her already that it felt like her body moved on its own, reacting before her mind could. She fell backward to try to move away, raising her hands in defense and that was all she could do. Meanwhile, her mind registered his dark brown fur, the salivating snout with two small but protuberant white teeth and dark shining eyes. She closed her eyes shut, and it was done.
