TW: I don't have to warn you about violence and gore, right? 👀
-----------------
"Wait, wait, hold up," Ethan asked, and Leah mentally checked out for a second while Jungkook, Lamar and Carlos spoke to him and Aaden.
It was a lot of information to take in, and she was jittery, unable to stand idly by in the middle of the town square, doing nothing, so she looked around.
She had never been to Numani, and there wasn't much to see — everything was mostly on fire or destroyed, including buildings, structures, the docks, everything. They had trouble stabilizing the trawler to get all the people out, and she was almost certain the hull had been damaged in the process, but that was no longer their problem.
While the briefing continued, she looked around. Taehyung was still where they left him, eating whatever broth as lunch was being served from the stash of food left by the cartel. The fight had been ugly; there were Rakyat still picking up bodies and finding wounded. Turned out that Franklin decided to advance in the absence of news from Lamar, and Numani was on high alert because of the SOS Thurston Town sent moments before. The few vessels that set out to help the island turned back once they noticed their base was under attack, leading to a much more deadly assault than originally planned.
"We lost way more warriors than we thought possible, and at least half were injured," Ethan said with a set jaw. He had blood over his vest, and Leah saw for the first time that his tatau included circles, teeth, and spearheads in infinite loops over his shoulders and down his back. "Franklin didn't make it."
They all had a moment of silence before Lamar asked, "Who will look after Numani now?"
"One of us, I'm guessing." Ethan huffed, then looked around. "You brought so many prisoners, and they had many here too. They all have to move."
"We need to decide what to do and fast," Aaden pressed, blue eyes glistening with anxiety. "Tomorrow, you said?"
Jungkook nodded. "At least. Viktor might arrive earlier, considering that Thurston Town likely sent SOS signals to him as well."
Leah swallowed dryly, the very thought filling her with trepidation.
"Maybe they'll spend the night there to recover," Aaden suggested, and Leah shook her head.
"We burned down the place."
"You did?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "What happened to just going in and out?"
His tease didn't phase her. "That place needed to go."
Her low tone was enough to put an end to the topic. Carlos finally raised his voice, "That means that after checking the place, they'll come for the main island. They'll come here, no?"
"No," Ethan said, his posture tense. "Now that we took this port, they'll likely go to Kell's Boat Repairs. I need to make a phone call."
Ethan stepped away for a moment, and Aaden turned to Leah. "Can I see the phone?"
Leah grabbed the satellite phone from her backpack and let him examine it while Lamar and Carlos commented on something else. Meanwhile, Jungkook couldn't take his eyes off the black device.
"It's definitely new," Aaden commented. "I've never seen one so small."
"Right?" Lamar chuckled.
"Do you think it will work?" Leah asked, having already shared the plan of setting up a signal with it.
"Yeah, I think so." Aaden extended it to Leah to return it. "We just need to think which tower is best, seeing that our time is limited."
Jungkook pursed his lips. "Maybe we should see what other numbers are in there or call someone."
