A.N. Trigger warning: death
*****
They were walking quietly in the jungle. Jungkook was going ahead as usual, though he occasionally looked back to check on Leah. That was how he knew her expression for the last hour: pale, eyes on the floor, lips pressed. He was bothered by the silence since it was okay to talk now before in a bit they would be forced to be quiet. But he couldn't blame her for being submerged in her thoughts, what they were going to do today would not be easy.
They reached the river they knew all too well and before crossing it through a nearby bridge, Jungkook turned back to Leah, "Let's do a pause first."
She agreed and sat down on the floor. She opened her backpack to get her bottle and drank a few sips of water, still zoned out. He crouched in front of her to get a sandwich and water and sighed quietly at her apathy.
"Eat something, we don't know when we'll have the chance to again."
She nodded and grabbed her sandwich, but she just stared at it. His words had made her stomach turn and she had zero appetite.
He ate his halfway while staring at her, wondering what to say.
"Before we go, we need to establish some things," he started, seeing her dim eyes turn to him. "We're going to do this slowly and calmly. If there's an opening to enter a hut, I will go and you wait for me outside. If something happens and I take too long, you leave. No matter what, do you understand?"
He waited for her to agree, but she just stared at him. Though her face was expressionless, he knew the gears were turning.
"We're a team," she pointed out. "I'm not leaving you behind."
He released a frustrated breath and kneeled closer in front of her. "You are, that's what I just told you to do."
She smiled through her apathy, "I won't." She saw his firm jawline and shrugged, "If you don't like it, let's turn back."
He shook his head and got up, "Then you can go back, I'll go on my own."
She got up too with a hurt expression but she didn't say anything. He could see she was upset because of his words, so he took a deep breath, running his fingers through his hair. Now that was an impasse.
"Eat your sandwich," he finally told her, finishing his as well.
She did so quietly, but only ate half. He was content with that. They crossed the bridge and entered the jungle again on the other side.
As they walked further and further, the jungle became thicker and Leah's breath started hitching until she came to a full stop. The world was spinning around her, she couldn't breathe. She leaned forward and supported her hands on her knees, trying to take deep breaths. In less than two seconds Jungkook's hand was on her back, rubbing it soothingly.
"What's wrong?" His voice had a pitch of worry.
She kept trying to breathe, "I... I'm scared, I think."
He walked to the side and crouched to be at her eye level. "I'm here with you. We'll be super careful. We'll probably not even leave the bushes today."
She shook her head, feeling her stomach moving dangerously. "It's not just that," her voice shook and she closed her eyes. Why was she always so emotional, she could never control her—
"Don't," he ordered firmly, seeing in her face she was scolding herself internally. "Tell me, talk to me."
Her now shiny eyes jumped to him and seemed to beg for something. She felt dizzy and despite her tries, she was still hyperventilating. He waited patiently for her to speak.
