Leah heaved a deep breath as she tightened a knot on the bandage around her left calf. From her position, sitting on a higher platform in the central tower overseeing the entrance of the Compound with her sniper in position, she saw the sun dawning in the horizon. Things had finally seemed to calm down a bit, which was the only reason why she decided to finally tend to her wound, drink water and snack on something from her backpack — she was dizzy, and it had been a long night.
Once Jungkook realized that Yoongi had not only disappeared into the jungle in the middle of the night, but had prisoners and cartel guards after him, he almost went crazy. It was impossible to prevent him from going after Yoongi, and Leah's only worry was that things weren't over at the Compound yet. It was the middle of the night, the cartel was coming and nowhere was safe at the moment; not the jungle, and certainly not the prison.
She had the radio, and although she feared the range would be too small for him to ask for her help, she let him go. He had their phone and Lamar had one too.
Lamar understood her worries well and was pivotal to help her devise a plan with Kalyan after Jungkook ran off. It turned out he was Turani's warrior chief and when he disappeared almost a year ago, it left the town significantly weakened. The good news was that he never turned, despite the torture, and was now a strong ally, helping Lamar and Leah coordinate everything.
It was him who appointed who should follow Jungkook and help him, considering they knew that part of the jungle better, and who should stay and secure the Compound.
"I'll go to the outer tower and cover the opposite side of the building," Lamar decided, turning to Leah. "You go back to the same spot and cover the gate and main roads."
"Shouldn't the tribe's best sniper cover the main entrance," Kalyan mused, scratching his chin.
Leah was about to agree when Lamar grinned, "I'm giving you the second-best to cover the easier task."
"Second, huh?" She asked, raising a playful eyebrow. "Wanna test that?"
"There's no clear road north and northeast, so trust me, you'll have it easier and way more agitated than me," Lamar sighed, gripping his weapon better with his right hand. "Shoot to kill whoever you don't know."
"I don't know everyone like you do," she argued. "Tell Ethan to put people in the driver and shotgun seats with tataus. Otherwise, I'll shoot to kill."
She had been there ever since, worried sick Jungkook would encounter trouble, but committed to do a good job. The only way she could help was by making the Compound a safe place for him to bring Yoongi back to, since there was nothing belonging to the Rakyat within walking distance. In fact, the closest town was Turani, and its safety was questionable. After that, only Knokke, but it was two hours away by car and as such, not an immediate possibility.
She couldn't say she didn't have her hands full because for hours, she kept being busy. The first cars nearing the Compound were speeding like crazy, and she hesitated, trying to observe, check and double check if they were friends or foes. It would be horrible to shoot allies, and her hesitation cost her three enemy cars reaching the gate.
Her heart was in her throat for some solid thirty minutes while she went through rounds and rounds of ammunition trying to help the people at the gate. Simultaneously, she was scared shitless that they'd break in or get reinforcements while she wasn't looking.
So after that wave, and after puking the acid inside her stomach due to the stress, she swore it wouldn't happen again. Her ammo was now limited, and her purpose was to make every shot count, not to waste five trying to get one stupid guy.
So, trusting that Lamar had transmitted the message to Ethan, she became diligent. Nothing was able to come close to the Compound from the south and neighboring main roads for a long while. Each shot hit the driver's chest, causing most of the cars to crash. Eventually, they tried to come close by driving slower with the lights off, but she still noticed the metallic reflections under the moonlight, and once she saw them, the shot was seconds away. One by one, their fate was similar.
