Jungkook sat on the chair next to Leah's bed, grabbing her hand and watching her sleep as she breathed mutely. Ever since he met her, that was something he'd do — look at her heaving chest to make sure she was breathing — and now, it wasn't any different. If anything, it was worse. Despite the device clipped onto her finger, eliciting the beep revealing her heartbeat, he couldn't relax. She'd been sleeping for hours, and he just couldn't be at ease or even close his eyes, regardless of the exhaustion in his bones. What if she stopped breathing? What if her eyes rolled back again?
He looked down at his hands and pressed his lips before looking back at her. Despite washing his hands so many times, he could swear they were still red from her blood. Or perhaps it was he who couldn't unsee it.
Perhaps he was still in a bit of a shock, even though most of the day had passed already. Earlier, he had gotten off the phone with Ethan and immediately made his way there to tell her the good news — everyone was safe, and it looked like the cartel would lose. Jimin was looking at her swollen shin, and she was talking to him casually while a blood bag above her head was connected to her arm.
"Good, it's not broken then." She sighed. "Don't worry about it."
Jungkook was hopeful for a second, thinking everything would be alright.
Then suddenly, it was as though her eyes lost focus, and she mumbled, "I don't feel so good."
Jimin almost chuckled, but Jungkook had his eyes on her and rushed forward to grab her however he could. He was still hyperactive from fighting back on the island and agitated as he went over Viktor's body on the floor to get to her — it was as though the nightmare was never-ending, even when he thought it was over.
Leah had lost all strength and fallen back on the raised backrest, her eyes rolling back inside her head, and Jungkook just started desperately calling her name as he tried to keep her upright. She was shaking in his hands, and as if that wasn't enough, the backrest and bed suddenly lowered behind her.
He reacted on instinct, grabbing her so she wouldn't fall back, and she started convulsing in his hands. He was so desperate, calling out to her, he didn't realize Jimin was screaming at him to let go. Only when Taehyung grabbed him and pulled him away in a headlock did he even realize there were people there.
His first instinct was to struggle and aggressively try to break free, but then Leah fell back. It looked like she was going to plummet head-first against the wall, and he lashed out even harder in Taehyung's firm grip.
"Jungkook, calm down!" He grunted with the effort to hold him back. "She told us to do this!"
Jungkook could see Jimin doing something, but he couldn't rationalize it at the time. All he saw was his wife with her legs in the air, lying awkwardly back while, every once in a while, a tremor shook her as she lay there unconscious.
"Leah?!" He tried shaking Taehyung off, but he gripped him firmly, so Jungkook thundered instead, "The injection! Give her one!"
"No," Jimin refused firmly despite the tension in his expression. "She told us not to."
Jungkook felt as though he was the only one who cared. Why wouldn't they do something? "But she's not waking up! Fuck—" He almost elbowed Taehyung in the face as he roared in frustration, "Just do it!"
"She said to do this," Jimin insisted, turning to him.
She wasn't shaking anymore, but Jungkook's frantic and panicked state didn't allow him to see it. Instead, he insisted desperately, "But maybe an injection would fix it!" Jimin was no longer looking at him but at her, and Jungkook felt all energy drain out of him as tears filled his eyes. "It worked before! Please!" Taehyung was holding him up more than back, while Jungkook's knees nearly buckled. "Why won't you help her?"
