♥︎Chapter Nineteen:
Nine to Five

☕︎"Five, meet Dot."

Dot, an overly cheery woman sitting at one of the many desks that filled the room they stood in, looked up at the mention of her name, though her meek amount of professionalism returned when she noticed who stood by her workstation.

"Oh, hi," she said to the authoritative woman and the terrifying boy in front of her.

The Handler remained indifferent. This was not introduction time, it wasn't time to make friends. "Dot is responsible for all apocalypse matters," she continued, her hand placed on Dot's shoulder. "In fact, it was Dot here who first flagged your appearance in 2019."

Dot flashed him a kinda, yet underlyingly cautious smile, her bright red lipstick staining her tooth. It was barely noticeable, but it was really irking the boy.

She was too happy. How could anyone be that happy? It must have been some sort of act, and he didn't like people who pretended to be someone they weren't. It made it more difficult to figure out their intentions.

"No hard feelings."

"Well, you certainly put us through the ringer. Outsmarting two of our so-called best temporal assassins." The Handler removed her arm from Dot's shoulder, placing it pridefully on his instead. "If that doesn't spell leadership material... " she spoke much louder, attracting the attention of everyone else in the room and only further increasing his uncomfort. He felt like everyone was watching him. Probably because they were. "...I just don't know. I suspect... you like a challenge Five, which is why I've given you a particularly complex first case."

She handed him a file from the empty desk she moved to stand on the other side of, an enthusiastic grin on her face as she did so. "It's too bad Joseph Späh decided against sabotaging the fuel tank. It would have been so much easier," she chuckled. "Anyhoo... If you have any questions... " the woman pointed towards the door. "I'll be right behind you."

And with that, she turned on her heel and left. How reassuring, he wanted to say, but he tried to keep their conversations to a minimum. They mostly consisted of her jabbering along while he thought of all the more important things on his mind. For example, how she knew Angelina Campbell.

He had tried to keep his thinking of her to a minimum, mainly because it distracted him from getting actual work done, but this was something he could not ignore.

He didn't want to believe what she had implied.

'Like mother like daughter I suppose,' she had said.

He did not even want to think of the possibility of Angelina Campbell being the daughter of the Handler, Heiress of The Commission. The thought made him feel physically sick. But it also just didn't make sense to him.
