It was currently 11:00pm and Hailey and Vanessa had just finished watching a movie and both decided to go to their beds as they were tired and they had to get up early for work in the morning. They currently lived together in Haileys apartment because when Vanessa first started working in the unit she never had a place to stay and Hailey offered to let her live with her for the time being until she found a place as she had a spare room that Vanessa could stay in.
It had just gone past midnight when Hailey was woken from her sleep by loud heavy taps on her window. She got out of bed and pulled over her curtain to see what the noise was, it was extremely heavy rain, she stood looking out the window for a few minutes, she looked down and she could see the trees swaying like crazy so she knew it was also very windy. Hailey was just about to turn around and get back into bed but before she could a flash of lightning lit up the sky and then there was a massive clap of thunder. As soon as this happened Haileys eyes went wide and she screamed, she jumped into her bed and pulled her bed sheets over her whole body so it was all covered then she got her pillow and pulled both sides of it up to cover her ears in an attempt to try and quieten the noises from outside.
Vanessa was also woken up by the thunderstorm that was happening. She was in her bedroom when she heard a scream. She knew it was Hailey and she ran straight through to Haileys room where the scream had came from and opened the door. She walked in and couldn't see Hailey anywhere in the room until she looked more closely at her bed and saw the outline of Hailey's figure under her bedsheets. She slowly walked over to her bed "Hailey?" Vanessa said in a quiet tone, not wanting to startle her. Hailey never replied but Vanessa could tell she was scared from the way she was acting. "Are you okay Hailey?" Vanessa questioned wanting her to communicate so she knew how she was feeling. Hailey popped her head out the top of the covers and nodded to Vanessa even though she had tear stained cheeks. She seen another flash of lightening and hide right back under her covers. Vanessa knew she wasn't okay and tried to talk to her to distract her but that didn't seem to work as Hailey was still hiding under her covers and every single time there was any loud noise or bang she would try coach Hailey through it but Hailey would just flinch and she would either scream or tears would escape her eyes and roll down her cheeks. This went on for about 15 minutes and Vanessa began to feel helpless, nothing she was saying or doing to try help Hailey seemed to be working or giving her any sense of comfort and she couldn't manage to calm her down.
Vanessa kneeled on the floor next to Hailey's bed and tried to think of something, anything else she could say or do to help try calm Hailey down and just as she thought there was nothing else she could try she got an idea. She decided to call Jay because she knew he knew how to calm her down and she knew him talking to her and her hearing his voice would instantly calm her.
Vanessa went and stood out of haileys room, she stood just outside the door since she still wanted to be able to hear her and keep an eye on her. She got her phone and dialled Jays number, after three rings he picked up. "Hi Vanessa is everything alright?" He asked his voice laced with concern and confusion as to why she was phoning him at this time of night. "Not really, I'm sure you know there is a really bad thunderstorm going on at the moment. Well Haileys really afraid of it, especially all the loud noises and I can't seem to calm her down at all. Shes currently under her bed sheets and she's been crying. I thought I'd phone you cause I'm hoping you'll be able to help calm her down." Vanessa told him with a hint of desperation in her voice. "I'm glad you phoned me, could you give her the phone so I can try talk to her please?" Vanessa went back into Haileys room and told her that Jay was on the phone and wanted to talk to her. Hailey pulled the covers off of the top half of her body so she could see Vanessa and take the phone from her hand.
"Hi." Was all Hailey said into the phone her voice quiet and full of fear. Jay could tell she had been crying, he could hear if I'm her voice when she spoke. "Hi Hails, talk to me about what's going on." Jay said even though he was aware of what was going on he wanted to hear Hailey talk about it so he knew what the main things scaring her were. "I'm scared Jay. I hate storms. I hate the loud noises, they're scaring me, I really don't like this at all." She ranted to him, her voice breaking as she began to sob. All Jay wanted to do was be with her so he could give her a hug and comfort her properly but that just wasn't possible at the moment. "Oh Hails, I know it's so loud and I know you hate it. I might not physically be with you but I'm going to stay on the phone with you until it's passed and also just as long as you need. I'm right here and Vanessa is there too, it's going to be alright I promise." Jay said in a calm tone. Another clap of thunder happened and startled Hailey. She inhaled sharply due to the fright it gave her and then she let out a frustrated groan, she hated that every time it thundered she got a fright. "Hey, it's alright, let's take a few deep breaths together okay?" Jay said not knowing if it was going to work but wanting to give it a try. He coached Hailey through some deep breaths telling her to breathe in for four seconds slowly and then breathe out for four seconds slowly, he did these along with her for 5-10 minutes and it worked a little bit as it managed to calm her physical symptoms of fear such as her heart racing and her erratic breathing however she was still thinking about the storm outside and her mind seemed to still be running like crazy with lots of different thoughts and fears to do with the storm. Jay had an idea of something he could do that would maybe distract Haileys mind as it would make her think about other things and steer her focus away from the storm. "Why don't I ask you some random questions that you can answer to see if we can try distract your mind at all?" Jay asked her, wondering if it was something she'd be willing to try. "Yeah sure." Hailey said willing to try anything that might help distract her. Jay spent a while just asking Hailey the most random questions from "what's the top three things on your bucket list"?" To "what would your dream house look like?" By the time Jay had ran out of questions the storm had passed them and there was finally no more loud noises, bangs of thunder or flashes of light. "Thank you so much Jay, you being on the phone really helped me and my fear." Hailey said feeling grateful for Jay and relieved that the storm was finally over. "Anytime Hailey, I'm glad I was able to help you and I'm always going to be here to help you with anything." Jay said wanting to reassure Hailey that he'd always be there for her and to help her.
Jay offered to go round to see Hailey and she liked that idea but it was literally almost 2am and they both had work early in the morning so Hailey didn't want him travelling in his car at this time to see her so she politely declined, insisting that he get some sleep. They both hung up the phone and fell asleep, both getting to sleep the rest of the night with no disturbances.
