A sacrifice

A sacrifice. A sacrifice was needed for this to work but a sacrifice is not worth it. Yes, I would have missed my home. Yes, it would have taken getting used to living in a realm I had no idea how to live in, but if losing one of us was what was needed to come back home then I would gladly leave it all behind. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

"Someone find gauze or something to stop the bleeding!"

Mason runs around the small cabin we stumbled upon when we landed back.

"Mason!" I finally found my voice.

Mason turns to me and down at my hands. Celeste, his mate, was the unfortunate sacrifice. I haven't found my mate, so I don't know how he feels but I know it's probably the worst feeling in the world.

After a few seconds Mason falls down next to me and takes Celeste from me. She was struck in the chest. I believe it was Chester, the three of them had a whole situation going on prior to this.

Chester had been in love with Celeste for such a long time, unluckily for him, she finally found her mate Mason. Chester and Celeste had been friends for so long and the time he finally felt he was ready to tell her, Mason came into the picture.

I had tried to guard everyone with my powers, but I can only guard one person at a time. Liberty kept having nightmares and was worried for Cleo's safety, so I guarded her. Celeste was left unprotected. Now she lies here with all of us around her.

Celeste was a witch, but she didn't know a spell to guard us. We had found out about the curse from a witch who had happened to be in the other realm too. Her ancestors were from Pristine, but they decided to stay there instead.

Cleo couldn't turn into her dragon because that would raise suspicion with the un-gifted humans so she couldn't do much in protecting either. Who knows how long we've been sitting here, clothes soaked in blood mourning our friend. I just hope that the future generation doesn't have to go through this.

What am I saying? It's inevitable, the portal wasn't permanently closed off. We couldn't sacrifice another.
