Loona sat in her call at the orphanage. So many years had passed. She didn't know how long she had been there anymore. She stared at the clock through the bars in silence. After lunch, Loona sat alone outside. She watched as the hellhound pups ran around. They were full of energy. And hope. That was something Loona had lost long ago when she realized that nobody wanted her. The younger hellhounds were chatting about everything they would do when they had a mom and dad. The happiness made Loona sick with envy. It must be nice to be so ignorant. But she couldn't hate them entirely. After all, she had been like them once. But she had also been unlucky. The hellhound orphanage had a rule. Once one of them turned 18, they were on their own. Loona's birthday was only a few months away.
Weeks turned into months. There was only one left. Loona was curled up in the darkest corner of her cell. There was no point in doing anything anymore. Her time was up. Suddenly, there were footsteps and voices. Loona knew every adoption officer's voice by now. But the second voice made her ears twitch. She looked up to see an Imp holding the bars and leaning through. He smiled and introduced himself. His name was Blitzo. He was planning to start a business soon and needed staff. The guy looked like a complete idiot and not capable of much. It was laughable. But when he offered to take her away from the orphanage, there were tears in her eyes for the first time in years. Loona had quickly learned never to show weakness. But now she stood and accepted. This was the first time anyone had spoken or even looked at her. Blitzo smiled and got the adoption process underway.
One hour later, Loona saw the outside world. The first Blitzo did was take her out for a real meal and a complete wardrobe. He also bought her a phone, paid off for a few months and ready to use. The last stop was getting groceries for home-cooked meals. Once all this was done, Blitzo took her home. It wasn't much, but it had a homey feel. He promised her better conditions once he had money. Loona couldn't believe it. Nobody had done anything like this for her. It was too good to be true. She felt like she was dreaming. Blitzo showed her to her room and gave her space to settle in. In the meantime, he tossed her new clothes into the laundry and put the groceries into the fridge. Next was planning a few outings together. There was a small family-run café nearby. It was perfect. Blitzo knew it wouldn't be wise to push Loona into talking. But he hoped the simpler atmosphere would help her feel comfortable.
Loona looked around her room. Her bed was soft yet firm. She lay down and stared at the fan. There was plenty of wall space for decorations, and her walk-in closet was spacious, with many ways to organize her clothes. It was unreal. Part of her still thought this was all a dream and that she would wake up in the cold cell any minute. But it was real. The bathroom had a set of fresh towels, designer hairbrushes, toothbrushes still in the packaging, and perfume. The mirror was spotless, and there were cleaning supplies and a hair dryer in the cabinet.
One week passed. Loona had settled in and even had a friend. Blitzo had figured out the basics of how-to dad. Luckily, one of his dad friends had plenty of advice. He had also been seeing someone for half a year now. Maybe, just maybe, he could give Loona a mother too. But that was far in the future. Right now, he had to focus on making Loona feel wanted and needed. His business was next. He already had a few employee candidates in mind. Along the way, Blitzo noticed that Loona was already opening up. Of course, it'd take a lot to gain her trust. But this small start was enough for him.
