ACTIVITY 1.1

[Class Experiment]

Place a piece of raw meat on a disposable container. Leave it outside for a day. Keep the meat out of reach of animals such as cats and other people.

Return on the following day and check the meat. Observe carefully. What else do you see aside from the meat?
The meat is slowly rotten day by day. It has an awful smell and it started to turn into brown color. Then the following day, I noticed that some flies landed on it. The meat became smaller and its bone started to turn into black as the day passed. I have also noticed some flies and maggots on it.

How does this explain the theory of spontaneous generation?

Spontaneous generation theory is an archaic scientific theory which stated that living organisms could arise from nonliving matter and that such a process was regular in nature. It also explained the origin of life from the nonliving subjects. Although it is back up with evidences but it is not true. After doing the experiment, the rotten meat does not turn into flies. Only flies can make more flies. Flies laid their eggs on rotten meat that is why there are maggots on it after leaving it outside of the house for days.

ACTIVITY 1.2

Materials:
▪︎ three glass jars (only one jar need to have a lid)
▪︎ gauze
▪︎ rubber band
▪︎ three small pieces of cooked meat

What have you Observe in jar A?
In the uncovered jars, flies entered and laid eggs on the meat. Maggots hatched from these eggs and grew into more adult flies.

In jar B?
In the gauze-covered jar, no flies were seen in the jars, but were observed or seen around and on the gauze, and later or after a hours a few maggots were seen on the meat. Then the next following days a lot of maggots were seen on the meat.

In jar C?

In the sealed jar, no maggots or flies were ever seen on the meat. In the sealed jar, no flies, maggots, nor eggs could enter, thus none were seen in the jar. Maggots arose only where flies were able to lay eggs. This experiment disproved the idea of spontaneous generation for larger organisms.
