"What's going on? What's this I'm hearing about superhumans", Mildred asked as we got out of the car. I walked past her without answering, leaving them to have a warrior conversation as I took the samples to Chris. Ryker had mind-linked him so he was waiting for me.

"Hey you!", he said cheerfully, and when I didn't return the energy he furrowed his brows. "I'd ignore him. He is just doing his job", he said taking the case from my hand. "How did you know?", I asked surprised. "I spend most of my time with him when he's in warrior mode. He tends to be... robotic", he said with a weak smile.

"Look, being mated to the Royals is never easy. When an Alpha thinks of his pack the Royals think of all the supernaturals. They're responsible for the well-being of all of us and sometimes even humans too. When rogues try to kill anything Ryker stops them, when bad people try to attack the Royal Pack he has to make sure he's on top of it too. He overthinks sometimes and that can make him say things without thinking", he said while mixing the sample in some science tube thingies. I settled with trying to digest what he was saying.

"My Mum was the lead scientist for the hunters and my Dad was the one inventing weapons that can kill supernaturals", I spoke abruptly making him freeze. "They had been my idols for as long as I can remember but all the admiration vanished when the Rogue Alpha broke into our home and captured us. I thought they were making medicine to improve human immunity... they even had awards for it", I felt a hand on my shoulder and when I turned it was Ethal. She looked at me with sadness.

"Don't do that to yourself, Rina. This is not your fault", she said with a sad smile. "You've been through a lot and there is no way I'm going to let you blame yourself every time we talk about hunters", she said squeezing my shoulder lightly and then pulling me in a much-needed hug.

Someone cleared their throat and we all turned to the lab entrance. It was Ryker. He had changed into his combat gear. "Ethal, we have to go", he said with his eyes on me. "Sure", she replied then went to kiss Chris goodbye before winking at me. I thought that I would get a goodbye kiss or even a hug but he just left. "Is he always like this?", I asked Chris and he nods then released a breath.

"Look, you've had a shitty past, I know, Milly told me and who cares? You can choose what to do now and make a difference, become a better person, and not someone who is defined by what her parents did. You can make your own legacy. You're mated to one of the most powerful beings in the world, you can either leave up to it or become even more powerful than him", he said with a proud smile making me smile back. There was something in the way he said it that made me feel like I was on top of the world.

I can do this I know I can.

"You're right. It's not my fault. I can make a difference", I said standing up with my head held high. "I know, I'm always right", he said making me roll my eyes. "Look, Something happened, I can absorb the poison and heal the wounds of people who have been attacked by superhumans somehow. Do you think we can test my blood and see what happens?", I asked and Chris' face lit up. "You're a genius. Wanna give me some of your blood?", he asked and I nod my head.

He took some of my blood and then mixed it in the sample, switching on the big screen so that we could see what was happening on the microscope. But nothing happened. "I don't understand", I said looking at him all confused. "Tell me exactly how it happened", he said and I told him what happened with Renee.

I was in deep sleep when I felt my body being shaken. "No... go away", I said snuggling in the sheets that smelled like Ryker even more. "I'm dying", the person that sounded like Chris making me jolt awake only to find his veins all black like Renee was. I pushed the sheets away and held his hand. "What did you do? Oh god! Somebody help!", I screamed and a few seconds later the guards rushed in along with Mildred and baby Blade.

"What happened?", Mildred asked looking worried. "He has injected himself with the sample, oh god what should we do? Help him please!", I begged then Abe entered looking calm. "Rina calm down and remember what happened to Renee", he told me and when our eyes met I was suddenly calm. I turned to look at Chris who was slowly closing his eyes and placed a hand on his face. "You're not dying on me", I whispered and connected my forehead with his, closing my eyes in the process. It felt like I was floating, the place was quiet and peaceful, I wanted to stay there forever but I was rudely interrupted by Chris's voice. "I knew you could do it", I opened my eyes and there he was. No black veins no panting.

"I hate you", I said hugging him which made him chuckle. "That was not so hard was it?", Abe said earning a smack on the back of his head the moment the guards left my room. "You almost gave me a heart attack, leave the science to Chris next time", Mildred said handing Blade to him. "I'm sorry, I was trying to help", he apologised looking at me.

"Chris, can you give us a minute?", Abe said making Chris bow and leave.

"What troubles you?", he asked with an emotionless face. "Everything, I can't seem to catch a break. I have been living a lie all my life. I had to pay for things I never did, I always come second.

Second choice in River Fall Pack, second choice to the Crown, and now even my own mate is afraid that I will turn on him and join the hunters. He thinks I will use my powers to control him", I said with a sarcastic laugh. "Would you?", he asked with a knowing smile. "Something tells me you know the answer to that", I said smiling back and wiping my tears away.
