As we made our way through the dense foliage of Viridian Forest, the towering trees overhead provided a natural canopy, shielding us from the prying eyes of Team Rainbow Rocket. The air was thick with tension, but the familiar sounds of rustling leaves and distant Pokémon cries brought a strange sense of calm. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, we were safe. Or at least as secure as one could be in a world that had turned upside down.
We found a small clearing hidden deep within the forest. I slumped against the base of a tree, feeling the weight of everything that had happened press down on me like a ton of bricks. Leaf sat nearby, hugging her knees to her chest, still shaken by what we'd just escaped. Mew floated silently beside me, its large blue eyes filled with wisdom I couldn't quite comprehend.
"Why did you help us?" I finally asked, breaking the silence. "Why me?"
Mew hovered closer, its soft voice echoing in my mind, "I've watched you, Y/N. Across many worlds, through countless battles. You've saved people and Pokémon alike. Your journey through time was no coincidence. It was fate."
"Fate?" I scoffed, shaking my head. "That's crazy."
Leaf glanced at me, her brow furrowed. "How can you understand what it's saying?"
I hesitated for a moment before answering. "It started with Mimi. After I lost Goodra, I began to understand Pokémon, their thoughts, and their feelings. At first, I thought it was just her, but then... it spread to more and more Pokémon."
Leaf blinked, trying to process what I'd said. Before she could ask more questions, I turned back to Mew, my frustration boiling over. "But why now? Why come to me at my lowest? If you were watching all along, keeping track of my victories and defeats, why wait until everything is gone?!"
Mew's voice was calm but firm. "Precisely because you are at your lowest, Y/N. I can no longer stand by and let this happen. For the sake of all people and Pokémon, we must stop MissingNo."
My heart skipped a beat, my mind reeling. "MissingNo... it's here?!"
Leaf looked at me, her confusion deepening. "What's a MissingNo?"
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "In another reality, another version of me watched as his world was destroyed by something... something no one could understand. Pokémon, monster, glitch—no one knew what it was. It wiped out entire regions, slaughtered people, and drove Pokémon to extinction. And now, that very force is awakening here."
Mew cut in, its voice urgent. "Not awakening, Y/N. Awakened."
I stared at Mew, the gravity of its words sinking in. "If you're the ancestor of all Pokémon, does that mean you know what MissingNo is?"
Mew shook its head, its expression grim. "I do not. All I know is that it must be stopped."
I backed away, frustration and hopelessness gnawing at me. "Newsflash, legendary Pokémon: because you waited so long, I lost my whole team. We all have. I have nothing left."
Mew floated closer, its eyes shining with determination. "That's not true. Everything you have is all around you."
I frowned, not understanding. "What does that even mean?"
Mew repeated, "Everything you have is all around you."
I looked around, and suddenly, it began to make sense. My eyes scanned the forest floor, noticing the resources hidden in plain sight—plants, tumblestones, materials that I could use. I began to piece it together, the gears in my mind turning faster and faster.
"I can start again," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a bolt of lightning.
Mew nodded, its expression softening. "Exactly. When you're at rock bottom, the only way to go is up. I will join you, Y/N. I will help you."
