Chapter 14

Driving down the road, he keeps hitting the steering wheel as tears stream down his cheeks. Thinking about everything she said to him, he can't help the pain that shoots through his chest. It hurts that they're eventually going to end things this way. Even if he has been a jerk, he never wanted to end things with her, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her as his woman, he wanted to keep her by his side and change for the better, for her sake.

He suddenly matches on the brake, bringing the car to an abrupt halt after a loud screech as he almost ran into a truck peacefully driving down its lane.

"Damn it!" He hits the steering wheel as he parks his car at the side of the road, resting his head on the headrest, and closing his eyes briefly.

'Just call off the damn engagement, and let me go, Ren. I don't love you' her words replay in his head for the umpteenth time, and he scoffs painfully, biting his bottom lip. As much as he wants to keep up with this, he knows that he will eventually hurt himself. Love can't be forced, and he'll eventually have to let go of everything that they shared in the past. Even if her parents force her to stay by his side, her heart will never belong to him.

Taking a deep deep breath, she glances at his phone laying carelessly on the seat beside him and sighs briefly. He lazily reaches out for it and turns on the screen light, revealing Tracy's picture. How much he misses the genuine smile on her face, how much he wants to see the smiles again. He never believed that the woman that once loved him so much, could suddenly change and doesn't want him anymore. It was all his fault, anyway. Tracy would've still been his if he didn't mess up by cheating on her.

Unlocking the phone, he clicks on the 'contact' icon, and scrolls through it for a few seconds before he stops and stares at the screen while contemplating whether to do this or not. As much as this will hurt her, it's the decision he'll eventually make, no matter how long it'll take him.

He clicks on the 'dial' icon and waits patiently as the phone rings.

"Mr. Ren. Good afternoon. How're you doing?" Mrs. William's bright voice sounds through the phone as soon as she answers the call, and he closes his eyes briefly.

"I want to call off the engagement," He forces those heavy words out of his mouth, his heart so heavy. Silence reigns on the other end for a couple of seconds, and he needs not to be told that his words left the woman shocked. How's she not supposed to be shocked when he dropped the bombshell? She wasn't expecting it, anyway.

"Did Tracy do something stupid? Why do you want to call it off? If you want to see me, I can come over to your place as soon as I'm back from the trip, and we'll sort things out. You don't have to do this," Mrs. Williams's voice quivers on the other end like she's nervous. Of course, she is.

He closes his eyes briefly, taking a deep breath. It's not that he wants to do this, but it's something that has to be done. Tracy looked like she hates him, she looked like she has no atom of feelings for him anymore, so why should he still stick around with her? To make her feel uncomfortable? He loves her so much to do that to her.

"It's not about Tracy, Mrs. Williams. You have been so good to me, and I didn't want to do this. I have been trying, but nothing is working. Your daughter... I never loved her. I don't want to have anything to do with her anymore," How much courage it takes him to spill those words out, knowing that deep down inside him, his heart beats for only her. He wouldn't want the woman to scold her later, so it's just best if he makes it look like he dumped her.

"Did she mess things up? What did she do?" Her voice rings through the phone, and he shakes his head as if she can see him.

"It's not about Tracy, and I hope you will understand that. I won't be contacting you often in the future, and he rest assured that our business relationship will still be intact later," He says to her before he hangs up the call, not bothering to hear what else she has to say.

'You don't have to worry about anything. We're no longer together now. I told your mom to cancel the engagement' he types in his phone, and sends the message to her, dropping his phone beside him on the seat afterward.

He finally drives away, heading to God knows where...

Ren's mansion

Lilian is in her room and reading her favorite novel. After the incident the previous night, she has been trying to get herself distracted from having a mental breakdown, and it's working.

She suddenly sighs and drops the phone, glancing at the wall clock afterward. She hasn't set her eyes on Ren since the previous day that the incident happened. 'Has he not come home yet?' She wonders, then shrugs and continues to read her book.

Her phone suddenly rings, and he glances at the screen. It's Nate.

"Good evening," She says on the phone as soon as she answers the call.

"Hey, Lilian. Did you sleep well? I'm sorry I didn't call you yesterday, I had to attend to something as soon as I got home," He explains, and she nods her head like he can see her.

"Hmm. It's fine. Thanks for yesterday, I appreciate it," she says to him.

"Yeah, it's fine. Just called to check on you. I'm moving out of my house tomorrow morning, so we may not talk on the phone tomorrow. I'll be quite busy," He says, and she hums an 'ok'.

"Bye, take care of yourself," He says to her before he ends the call, and she sighs briefly.

Staring at the screen of her phone, she can't help the questions that run through her mind. Who the hell is this young man, and why does he treat her so differently?

The sound of the knock on the door suddenly pulls her attention, and she raises her gaze from her phone to look at the closed door, wondering who would be there.

"Who's there?" She asks as she flings her legs down the bed, and gets on her feet.

"It's me, Lisa," She sighs briefly. She hasn't seen him since she returned from the club yesterday.

She drags her legs sluggishly to the door and pulls it open to see Lisa standing in front of the door.

"Lisa..." She calls with a questioning expression on her face.

"Lilian... I'm sorry about what happened yesterday. I shouldn't have taken you to the club. Believe me, I had no idea..."

"I'm not mad at you, Lisa. You've apologized over the phone yesterday, so this is not necessary," She says to her, and she slowly nods her head.

"Uhm... Have you seen Ren?" She asks Lisa, even if she doesn't want to.

"No, he hasn't returned home since yesterday," Lisa shakes her head, and she slowly nods her head.

"Has anyone called him yet?" She further asks, and Lisa shakes her head.

"Uhm..." Her voice trails off when she hears her phone ring from the bed and glances back at it.

"Excuse me," She turns and walks over to the bed. She picks up her phone and slides the answer button.

"Lilian, this is Leo, Ren's friend. I just got a call from the bar that he got drunk and can't go home. Can you help me pick him up from there?" The strange masculine voice sounds from the other end, and a thin line appears between her eyebrows as she squints her eyes in confusion...
