Chapter 12
"Let go of her," The loud music stops abruptly, followed by a cold voice that sends chills to the air for some seconds, and Ren stops abruptly, while still having Lilian trapped in between his arms.
Lilian blinks his eyes repeatedly, arguing with herself about the voice she just heard. Although they haven't known each other for long, she could always recognize his voice anywhere. It's Nate's. What the hell is he doing at the bar?
The thick sound of footsteps drawing close to them makes her heart beat nervously against her chest, and she gulps down nothing nervously. Still trying to register what's happening, someone suddenly pulls Ren forcefully away from her, now revealing Nate's face. He's staring at her with a blank expression on his face.
"Hey, man. How dare you interrupt me? Are you out of your mind?" Ren rumbles angrily as he staggers back and forth. It's obvious that he's drunk and not thinking straight right now.
"You better now touch me with that hand. You won't want to end up in the hospital, would you?" Nate's lips tug up in a smirk as he turns to face Ren, who just scoffs unbelievably. How dare this bastard threaten him?
"How dare you! He's my wife, do you know that?" He spills out angrily, pointing his finger at him, and the crowd murmurs in surprise as they stare at Lilian in pure disgust.
"How can he marry such an ugly girl?"
"Gosh! Why her of all women out there? She's so fat and ugly,"
"Wow! I was thinking his taste will be great but turns out that I was mistaken," Hearing murmurs from the crowd, she slowly clenches her fists beside her and the tears in her eyes finally sneak down her cheeks. Her heart wrenches in pain, and she bites her bottom lip in pain.
"Your wife? That's crazy, you know? Who does this to his wife, let alone in public? Do you have respect for yourself as a man, and the woman you claim to marry? How dare you still call her your wife after molesting her?" Nate snaps at him angrily, forcing himself not to pounce on this bastard and beat the hell out of him.
"What's your business?" Ren sneers at him, and he rolls his eyes.
"You don't get to ask me that, Ren Bradford... I choose what to intervene in, and I chose to do this right now. If you lay a finger on her again, I promise that you will spend the rest of your life regretting it," Nate threatens him.
"What's so good about her?"
"Why's he defending her?" Murmurs fill the club.
"And you all watching this bastard molest an innocent girl, what do you call yourselves? Humans? What if it was your sister that was being molested? What if it was your girlfriend? Would you stand there and watch her cry?" Nate snaps at no one as looks at them one after the other with an angry look on his face.
"You will regret this, young man," Ren breathes heavily as he slumps on the chair and starts to throw up. Why the hell did he drink so much tonight? His friends warned him not to drink much alcohol but he didn't want to listen.
Nate glares hard at him for a few seconds before he finally grabs Lilian's hand and walks out of the club, while she cries heavily.
"What the hell did you come to this kind of place to do at this time of the night?" He asks as soon as they get outside the club, and she turns her face away as tears find their way out of her eyes.
"Thank you for just now," She mutters.
"I will take a cab home," She says instead, turning around to leave, but he holds her hand bringing her to an abrupt halt.
Her heart stops beating for seconds as his hand contacts her skin. She feels a weird sensation spur through her, and she can't help but ask herself what the electrified feeling was about.
"I'll drop you home. Get inside the car," He says to her as he retracts his hand, and she quickly shakes her head.
"No, you don't have to worry. I... I... I will take a cab home," She quickly protests, and he rolls his eyes.
"I don't want to trouble you," She further says, and he scoffs.
"Who said that you're troubling me? Come on, get inside the car. I will drop you off at home," He insists.
"But it's late, and..."
"Just get inside already, it's getting late," He cuts her off calmly as he pulls the door to his car open for her, and she hops in hesitantly. As much as she is scared of trusting him, on second thought she feels like there's no need for that. Besides, he wouldn't have defended her just to hurt her later, right?
"Have you had something to eat yet? I can drive you to the restaurant to eat something before I drop you off at home," He says as he hops in and ignites the car engine.
"Hmm... I'm fine," She shakes her head and replies in a low tone. She hasn't eaten anything since the afternoon, and she was going to eat earlier before she came here, but there's no appetite left for her again.
"Are you sure?" He asks her, but her grumbling stomach replies to him instead.
"That's it, we're going to the restaurant," He says as he sets the car in motion and drives down the road afterward, while she just stares out through the window as many thoughts flood her mind. What if Nate wasn't there to save her? What would've happened? Was that how those people would've stood there and watched her get raped?
Tears stream down her cheeks as she rests her head on the headrest, and her heart wrenches in pain.
"Why are you helping me?" She suddenly tilts his head to look at him with a demanding expression on her face, earning a glance from him.
"Nothing. I just feel like you need help, and I'm rendering it," He shrugs as he stays focused on the road.
"Hmm... Thank you," She mutters, turning her face away afterward. Even if he's doing this out of pity, at least she's glad that he's not disgusted with her like every other person. At least he cares about her, or maybe he's just a good person.
The sound of her ringing phone pulls her attention, and she checks the screen to see that it's Lisa. She sighs briefly and slides the answer button.
"Hmm..." She hums when she picks the call.
"Lilian, I'm so sorry about what happened. It was all my fault. Where are you now? I'll come to get you," Lisa's guilty voice sounds from the other end, and she sighs briefly. It wasn't entirely her fault that such a thing happened to her at the bar. Nobody would've molested her if Ren wasn't there because nobody would want to get involved with an ugly like her, so she's not to be blamed.
"I'm fine, Lisa. It wasn't your fault, OK? Don't worry, you can head home now. I'll join you soon," She assures Lisa.
"No, it's fine. I can come to get you," Lisa insists from the other end, and she sighs briefly.
"I'll be home soon. See you," She says before she hangs up and sighs.
Nate drives them to the restaurant and bought her food to eat before he finally drives her home.
"Thank you," She mutters after she hops out of the car.
"You're always welcome. You can always call me when you need help. I'm always close to you," He says, confusing her with his last statement, and she pulls a puzzled look.
"Hmm," She nods her head regardless. She's not in the mood to ask him any questions now. All she wants to do is have her bath and sleep so she can be calm.
"Goodnight," He says to her before he kicks his car and zooms off.
She turns and finally walks back into the house...
