Chapter 23

Her heart beats rapidly against her chest as she stares at the building in front of her. She has just arrived at the restaurant where the dinner appointment is supposed to hold.

'What if she goes in there, and gets bullied again as usual? Will she be able to handle it? What if they don't want to see her because they feel like she's ugly?' She thinks to herself. As much as she wants to turn back because she feels she can't do this, on second thought, she knows she has to do this if she wants to earn a living for herself. It's her first job opportunity and letting her insecurity make her lose it is the last thing on her mind.

"You have to accept whatever you see in there," She whispers to herself, then takes a deep breath before she walks elegantly toward the entrance door. Although she's fat, she's still smart enough to walk elegantly.

She struggles with her heels as she walks into the spacious and classy restaurant, enduring the excruciating pain she's feeling in her feet. Since Ren insisted that she wear heels, who the hell is she to say no to him? She would be looking for some trouble if she dared to have tried that.

She walks straight to the VIP section where the client is said to be waiting for her, or where she's supposed to wait for him or her, rather.

Ignoring the stares from people in the restaurant, she finally arrives at the VIP, and sits on the empty chair, since the supposed client is not yet around. She arrived first.

"What would you care for, miss?" The waiter that leads her to sit there asks, and she shakes her head.

"No, I'm fine," She smiles at him politely, and he walks away afterward.

Her heart beats rapidly against her chest as she waits for the client, praying that he or she doesn't arrive soon. She needs so much courage to do this, knowing that it's her only chance, but she doesn't also feel like it'll turn out well.

"Did I keep you waiting, miss Lilian Sanchez?" The familiar voice snaps her out of her train of thought, and she slowly raises her gaze to behold his handsome face. It's Nate!

"Nate?" She calls confusingly to be sure her eyes are not doing tricks on her, and he shrugs as he pulls out a chair and sits on the chair across from her.

"Hmm? Surprised?" The corner of his lips twitches into a smirk as he reclines on the chair.

"Why is it you?" She asks, confused.

"I should be asking you that. My boss asked me to attend the dinner on his behalf. I thought I would see Ren here, how come you're the one I'm seeing?" Nate asks, rather confused but not too looking like it.

"I'm going to be working as Ren's secretary, so I may be running his errands henceforth. Let's get down to business already," She replies to him, and he slowly nods his head. Even if he wants to ask when she started working for him, he decides against it. What's the point of asking? It'll make him look meddlesome, anyway.

"Sure," He replies to him.

The meeting went well, and she's happy that she was able to convince Nate that they are really worth the contract.

"Mind having dinner with me before you go home? This is me asking you as a friend, and not a client," he asks her, and she stays silent for a few seconds before she nods her head. Besides, she doesn't feel like going home yet.

"Great. Waiter..." He calls out to the waiter, and he rushes over to them.

"What would you like to have?" He asks her, and she shrugs.

"Anything is fine by me," She says, and he nods his head.

"Two glasses of orange juice, meatballs, and two plates of pasta," He says to the waiter, who walks away to get their order.

The waiter returns a few minutes later and serves their food.

An awkward silence assumes the air as the only sounds that echo in the air are the ones from their cutleries.

She glances up at him and bites her bottom lip. She has so many questions running through her mind, but what if he feels uncomfortable answering them?

"I've not known much about you. Do you mind telling me a bit about you?" He suddenly asks out of the blue, getting rid of the dead silence, and she glances at him.

"Hmm..." She hums and bites her bottom lip. Although she doesn't feel comfortable telling people about herself, but this man has been so nice to her, he has been there for her, and always showed up whenever she's in trouble, so it's only right that they get to know each other, right?

"My name is Lilian Sanchez, twenty-one, the only child of my parents," She shrugs. That's the only thing she can allow him to know for now. Of course, she doesn't want to look pathetic in front of him. Telling him about her sick dad is as good as seeking sympathy from him, and what about her mom? She doesn't even want to think about the woman that abandoned her when she was born. Her stepmother? That is the last person she wants to talk about.

"Hmm... Your parents? Do you want to talk about them?" He asks after a long silence, and she shakes her head slowly.

"What about Ren? Do you want to talk about him?" He asks curiously, even if he doesn't want to be meddlesome. He's just curious to know the relationship between them. Why are they together?

"No, I don't want to," Again, she shakes her head. Because, what the hell is she supposed to tell him? That her stepmother sold her to him or used her to settle her debt like she's some commodity? He'll find it weird and stupid.

"Alright," He nods his head, even if he feels a little disappointed that she doesn't want to tell him what he wants to know.

"There's nothing much to know about me. Nate Wilson, twenty-nine years old. Lived with my parents in Texas, but had to move in here a couple of weeks ago to take care of something here," he says, and she slowly nods her head.

"Thanks for always being there for me," She says to him, and he nods his head.

"What is going on here?" Kira's voice pulls their attention as she walks angrily over to them, slamming her hands on the table...
