Chapter 51

Nate POV

Since I don't have any other choice, I made up my mind to accept mom's offer, and I would have to travel to Texas and maybe stay there forever because there was no way she would let me away once I get there.

'I accept your offer, mom. I will relocate to Texas in one month, can you unfreeze my account now?' Those are the words that were so hard to spill out, but I eventually did, because I wanted to help my friend. I can't watch her continue to live like this in pain or let her get entangled with the man again.

'No, I am not patient enough to give you one month. You have three days to come here, and if you agree, I will unfreeze your account right away' she had said to me, and I didn't have any other choice but to accept her proposal.

It's almost evening, and my bags are already packed up since I will be leaving this place first thing tomorrow morning.

Staring at my credit hand, I sigh briefly before I reach out to the small gift bag standing on the bedside table. I prepared the gift for Lilian since I can't even say it to her face that I will be leaving here maybe forever, by tomorrow.

Finally dropping the card inside, I stand up from the bed and stride out of my room, not after picking up my car keys from the bed where I left them earlier.

The drive to the hospital took much time since I was taking my time. It hurts that I'm going to be leaving Lilian, but I have to do this for her sake. How time flies. Just months ago, we met at the villa where she married that bastard. I liked her at first sight, and as time went by and I got to know her more, I liked her even more, because of her personality and everything about her was so natural. She has been the best friend I ever had over the years of my life, and the few months we spent together, feel like years to me. I never imagined it'd hurt this much, leaving her, but this has to be done, regardless.

Arriving at the hospital after a few minutes of driving, I head to the ward where I'm sure she should be with her dad now, and as expected, I find her sitting by herself in the hallway, while resting her head on the wall.

"Nate?" She calls and turns her gaze to me as soon as she notices my presence, and I smile at her.

"You're good?" I ask her as I sit beside her, and she only nods her head.

"You are here with me, so, why not?" She smiles at me, but I can see the pain in the smile. She's only trying to be fine, I know she's not.

"Have you eaten yet?" I ask her, and she slowly nods her head.

"Don't lie to me, Lily. Have you eaten?" I ask her for the second time, and she sighs as she stares into space. I knew it!

"How am I supposed to eat when my dad is dying? He hasn't eaten for months, and I'm always eating every day. Don't you think it'll be unfair to him?" Tears trickle down the corner of her cheek, and I sigh briefly. Can't I be here to wipe her tears away always? It's sad, honestly.

"Come on... I told you your dad will be fine, okay? You just need to have faith, and..."

"He had a convulsion earlier today... He was going to die... He would've lost his life if I was not here on time to call the doctor to his air. What if I was not here? That's how he would've lost his life, right?" She breaks down in tears as she buries her face between her palms. Yes, I want to console her and tell her everything will be fine but do I have the right to do that anymore? No, I lost it, the moment I chose to betray her.

"You can cry all you want, Lily... Don't just hurt yourself," I whisper as I pat her back, and she chuckles dryly as she raises her gaze to look at me. She stares intensely into my eyes with an unreadable expression on her face. For seconds, I feel my heart misses a beat, and it came thumping violently against my chest like it was fighting its way out.

"Will you always stay by my side, Nate?" It's as if she already knows that I'm leaving her soon.

"You have always been the only one that was there for me. Do you promise me to always be here?" She inquires, and I gulp down nothing as I suddenly feel waves of guilt surge through me.

"Come here," I pull her into my arms and hug her tightly, as this may be our last hug. Tears well up in my eyes as I hold her tightly in my arms, but I try to fight them back because there's no way I'm going to let her suspect anything.

"Shhhh! Don't cry," I hush her as I pat her back slowly.

"Why don't we go out and eat?" I ask her after she pulls away from me, and she shakes her head.

"I don't have an appetite," She replies to me, and I sigh as I cup her cheeks in my palm.

"Come on, let's go eat something. You are going to fall sick if you starve yourself, and I know you wouldn't want that. I mean, who will take care of your dad if you fall sick, hmm?" I rub her cheeks gently, and she smiles at me.

"Then I will take the smile as a yes," I utter, and she nods her head.

"Good. Why don't we go to the restaurant blocks away from here? Their food is really nice," She nods her head.

"By the way, I got this for you on my way here," I hand her the small bag, and she quickly collects it from me.

"What is inside?" She inquires as she sets to open the bag, but I hold her hand gently. She may try to stop me if she finds out what's inside, so I can't let her open it now.

"Why don't you open it later when we get back? It's a surprise," I smile at her, and she stares at me suspiciously for seconds, before she nods her head.

After she drops the bag inside the ward, we finally leave the hospital to hang out together.

We spent some hours, holding hands and taking a walk after we left the restaurant, and I must confess that it was fun.

"I had fun today," She says when we get back to the hospital.

"I'm glad you did. You should always have this much fun, whether we're together or not," I say to her, and she nods her head.

"I think I should start going home now. I have something to take care of," I say to her, and she nods her head.

"Good night, then. We'll see tomorrow," She utters before she turns and walks inside the hospital. Only if she knows there's no tomorrow. This may be our last time seeing each other unless we are able to see in the future.

I turn and hop inside my car before I drive off from the hospital premises...
