Chapter 38
Two weeks later
Lilian POV
The past two weeks have been so choked up for me, and guess who has been indoors because of the fear of being attacked by reporters? Well, it's me.
Quick one, I never imagined Ren is a celebrity that would have many fans on social media. I'm sure you wouldn't be interested in the insults I've been getting all these while. Even after the pictures of me making an attempt on my life went viral, nobody pitied me, they didn't give a damn about what happened to me, all they care about is my appearance.
The sound of my ringing phone pulls my attention, and I lazily reach out for it. It's Ren.
"Meet me in the living room," His voice sounds through the phone as soon as I answer the call, and the call drops dead afterward.
"What happened?" I mumble as I get off the bed and advance toward the door. Have I mentioned how Ren has been strangely nice to me recently? I don't know what came over him, but he hasn't bullied me in a while, and he seems to have been keeping his distance from me for some reason best known to him.
I stride out of the room and make my way to the living room.
Stepping into the living room minutes later, I stop on my track when I see Ren sitting in the living room. He's not alone, but with someone that only her back is visible to me. I gulp down nothing, suddenly feeling nervous as many questions run through my mind. Is she a reporter that has come to get words from me? What do you expect, since the rumors have not died down and it's already affecting his business?
Pushing all the thoughts to the back of my mind, I proceed to the living room.
"You asked to see me," I manage to say as soon as I get to where he's sitting while holding my gaze low.
"Yes. Sit," He says to me, and I sit on the couch, fondling with my fingers.
"This is my sister, Rena. Rena, this is Lilian," His voice rings through my ears, and I raise my gaze to see the most beautiful young lady, sitting there with an angelic smile lingering on her lips as her pair of hazel eyes pierce at me. Without being told that she's Ren's sister, I can see the slight resemblance between the two.
"Hi, Lilian... It's nice to meet you," She smiles at me widely, showing off her dimple, and I must confess that she's a beauty. For some seconds, I wish that I can be as beautiful as she is, I wish that I'm this elegant. Maybe I wouldn't be receiving all these insults if I was like her. Maybe I was just born an unfortunate being.
"It's nice to meet you," I reply to her, maintaining a straight face, because why the hell should I smile? I'm already nervous that she will insult me just like every other person that meets me always does, so trying to smile at her now may even make her see me as more ugly.
"Don't give me that look, Lilian... I'm sure my brother may have put you through a lot, you shouldn't see me the way you see him. I'm not as bad as he is," She says to me in her sweetest voice, and I glance at Ren to find him glaring hard at her like he would devour her anytime soon.
"Hmm," I nod my head nervously, looking down at my feet.
"Come on, sweetheart. Look at me when I'm talking, ok?" Her voice sounds through my ears, and I bite my lips as I slowly raise my gaze to find her smiling at me. She is not only beautiful but seems nice too. I wonder if they are really siblings because I can't be convinced. She's nothing like the annoying jerk Ren.
"Hmm," I slowly nod my head. Well, I'm still confused about why she's here, and why Ren had to call me.
"So, I will go straight to the point, Lilian. About the rumors on the internet... I'm sure you know how it has affected my business negatively, and after thinking about it, I think we need to do something about it before it goes bad..." He pauses and leans forward, while I just stare at him in confusion because I still have no idea where he's driving at.
"Hmm," I nod my head for him to continue.
"I have contacted a journalist that will come here in a few days to have an interview with us, and you need to tell them that we're married for real," He says to me, and my eyes slowly narrow in shock and my mouth drops open too.
"Huh?" I blink my eyes a couple of times to be sure that I'm not dreaming, but this is a freaking reality.
"I know this can be traumatizing, but I promise that nothing will go wrong. I have seen everything, and I feel bad for you. You need to be protected, and I assure you that nobody will dare bully you, okay?" Rena chips in before I can continue, and I tilt my head to look at her.
"Lilian..." She pauses, then stands up from where she's sitting and walks over to sit beside me on the couch. She holds my hands.
"I know it's hard to trust Ren, but you can trust me. Just this once," She says to me, and I hear Ren scoff.
"Can you just stop with this crap, Rena? You're making me look like the bad guy here..."
"You are the bad guy, sweetheart. I'm trying to clear your mess here, so why don't you just shut your mouth and watch me do this," She rolls her eyes at him, and he scoffs. Wow! I guess she has a strong bond with him.
"Whatever!" He rolls his eyes, and recline on the chair.
"So, Lilian... After the interview, my mom will be coming here later. She's going to give you a hard time, but you just have to endure things, and I will also be here to protect you, okay?" She says to me, and my heart sinks into my stomach. I have only seen the woman once, which was on the day of the wedding, and she didn't look like a nice person. Having her around here is going to be as good as dead, and I can't deny the fact that I'm already scared of the nightmare she will give me later.
"I'm here to put you through the things you would need later. The thing is, you and Ren need to act as real couples to clear the rumors on social media, and mom needs to be convinced herself. I understand that this may sound like we're using you, but trust me, it's not like that..." She bites her bottom lip and sighs briefly. She looks guilty and bad about this, but I understand that she's considerate. Not like her brother that would force me to do it, simply because he feels like I'm his property.
"Uhm..."
"It's fine... I... I will do it," I cut her off.
"If that is all, then I beg to take my leave now," I stand up to my feet and hurry to the staircase, climbing it as fast as my legs can carry me.
Barging into my room minutes later, I crash against the wall and burst into tears. Just the imagination of what people will say about me is already driving me crazy. The thought of the insults and the pain I will feel later, it keeps haunting me, and the more I try to forget it, the more it keeps coming.
My phone suddenly starts ringing, bringing me out of my train of thought, and I drag myself up to my feet. Dragging myself toward the phone on the bed, I pick it up and slide the answer button after I see the strange number on the screen of the phone.
"Hello, who is this?" I ask as I take a seat on the bed.
"Tomorrow at Dine and smile restaurant, VIP section, 8pm on the dot. I will be waiting for you," The masculine voice sounds through the phone, and the call drops dead immediately.
"Hello... Hello... Are you there?" I say on the phone, but the call is long dead.
"Who was that?" I ask myself as I slowly bring the phone down from my ear...
