Chapter 9
"Hey, Lilian. You mistakenly took my phone. I'm outside your gate, please come outside," Nate's familiar voice sounds through the phone when the phone rings again, and she finally answers the question.
"I'm sorry about that. Can I return it tomorrow, please? I am not free now," Her voice sounds dull and stressed enough to get anyone worried.
"Are you OK? Did something happen?" Nate's voice sounds through the phone, and she shakes her head like he can see her. How's she supposed to tell him that after being forced into marriage with Ren, she was forced to donate blood to his fiancee or whatever he called her again?
"Yes, I'm fine. I'm just a bit tired after a long day, and..."
"Alright, it's fine. You can return it tomorrow," His voice cuts off before silence reigns on the other end, which means that the call has been disconnected. She sighs briefly and in relief as she brings the phone down from her ear, and drops her hand on her lap.
"Do you need me to get you anything?" Lisa's voice disrupts her, just when she's about to zoom off into deep thought, but she just shakes her head in denial.
"I'll be fine," She smiles at Lisa as she spills those lies, even if she knows that she can never be fine. Thinking about what Ren did to her is enough to make her cry her eyes out, but what is the point?
Would she be treated this way if she were not chubby and ugly? Would anyone walk on her if she were to be a beautiful and elegant young lady just like every other woman out there? Just like their lives matter, hers matters too, even if nobody wants to think about that. The pain is always there, no matter how she tries to get rid of it.
"Lilian..." Lisa breaks the awkward silence as she stares at her with pain written all over her. From the first day that Lilian stepped into Ren's mansion, Lisa has found herself developing a likeness for her regardless of how she looks. Seeing her in this state hurts her heart, and thinking about what their boss did, she can't help but curse at him silently even if she can't say it to his face.
"Hmm?" She replies as she tilts her head to look at Lisa while having a questioning expression on her face. She was expecting her to be like them, she was expecting her to treat her like every other person does, but she doesn't seem to be like them. It's not that she trusts her anyway, because why should she? What if she's just feeling sympathetic toward her?
"I'm sorry about what happened," Lisa says, and she only fakes a smile. Why's she apologizing? It was never her fault that she was born like this, and it wasn't her fault that people treat her like a piece of trash, so why is she apologizing?
"Hmm," She nods her head, regardless.
"Will you be fine?" Lisa asks with concern, and she nods her head, even if she knows that she won't be fine.
"Hmm," She hums as she turns her face away.
"Lilian..." The door suddenly bursts open, and Nate storms in, but stops on his track when he sees Lilian on the bed.
Lilian blinks her eyes in shock as she stares at him with confusion written on her face. How did he find her here?
"Are you OK, Lilian? What happened?" He asks curiously.
"Uhm... I'll leave the two of you alone. Call me if you need anything, Lilian," Lisa stands up and walks out of the ward, leaving the two of them inside.
"What happened?" Nate asks again as soon as Lisa is out of the room, but she just smiles at him.
"It's nothing serious. I got feverish when I got home, and I was rushed to the hospital," She lies to him even though it's obvious that she's not feverish. She couldn't have told him the truth, right?
"Are you feeling alright now?" He asks with concern, trying to touch her forehead, but she shifts back in fear. They have just met barely twenty-four hours, and although he has been so nice to her, she shouldn't trust him so easily, right?
"I'm sorry," He retracts his hand, and apologizes to her, while she just nods her head.
"I'm fine. It's not something serious," She further says, and he slowly nods his head even as a part of him doesn't believe what she told him. For some reason, he feels like what she said isn't the truth, he feels like she's hiding something from him, something that's hurting her deep inside her...
"How's she, doc?" Ren asks worriedly after watching the doctor examine Tracy for a few minutes.
"She's out of danger now. You should let her rest, and she will be fine later," the doctor gives him a reassuring smile, and he nods his head.
"I will be in my office. Let me know when she wakes up," The doctor says to him before he walks out of the ward, leaving Ren to stay with her. She has been moved from the ER to the ward.
Ren stares at the doctor until he's out of his sight before he finally turns to sit on the chair beside the bed, taking her hand afterward. His heart hurts as he stares at her pale face.
"You will be fine, OK?" He whispers like she can hear him, then plants a soft kiss on the back of her palm.
Thinking about Lilian, he sighs briefly as he throws his head back. A part of him knows that what he did to her was not fair, but then he couldn't have left the only woman he loves to die, right? He would do anything to save her, even if it means him sacrificing other lives to do it, he would do it without hesitating. With her, nothing else matters to him...
