THE POGUES LIT A SMALL FIRE AND SAT AT RIXON'S COVE, HIGH ON ADRENALINE. Liv felt as though she was in paradise— surrounded by her best friends, the stars shining above her, feeling like she was the most beautiful person on Earth. She could get used to this.

"Hey, guys. So, like, my dad's already gonna kill me. So what's this mandatory meeting about?" Pope asked, sitting on the log next to JJ.

"Might as well tell him, man, before we're gaffed." JJ replied, messing with Liv's rings as he held her hand on his lap.

John B looked around to see his friends' eager faces. "You ready for this?" Kiara agreed and Liv nodded, forcing herself to stay calm as she felt JJ start to trace random shapes into her palm. "So... the gold never went down with the Royal Merchant." Pope scoffed, brushing him off, but JJ assured him that he needs to hear John B out. "It's been here the whole time. It's on the island."

"Are you serious? Oh my God."

"I'd like to voice my skepticism."

Liv just let her lips part as she tried to comprehend what the boy had just told them. "I'm sure you would, Pope," John B started, standing from his seat, "but, can I please present you with my evidence, sir?" Pope nodded, and John B was quick to grab his bag. "All right. So, in my backpack, I have a letter from Denmark Tanny."

"Who the hell's that?" Kiara queried.

"Denmark Tanny was a slave that survived the Royal Merchant wreck. Check this out." The brunet boy opened the letter up, moving closer to Kiara and handing it to her. "Okay, slaves weren't mentioned as crew members on the ship, but my dad, he found the complete manifest. That was his big discorvery. So Tanny used the gold from the Merchant to buy his freedom." Kiara passed the letter over to Liv as John B kept talking, who then passed it to Pope after she looked over it.

"After that, he bought his farm. Drumroll, please, because that farm is... Tannyhill Plantation. Yeah, so, after that, he used his money to free even more slaves, and then he sold a shit-ton of rice, which pisses off all the white planters, and then? They decide to lynch him."

The redhead's face scrunched in disgust and horror, but John B just kept going. "So on the day they were coming to get him, he writes a letter to his son as a farewell, and in the last line of that letter, he leaves a coded message about where to find the gold."

"Where?" Kiara whispers.

"Harvest the wheat in parcel nine, near the water. Except— there's no wheat. You see, wheat is code for gold." John B moved over to shine a flashlight on the letter. "The gold is in parcel nine near the water. All we need is an original survey map of the property, and we've found the gold."

Liv looked over to JJ, who was already smiling, and let out a breathy laugh. They actually did it. John B discovered where the gold was. JJ stood and walked over to John B, picking him up in a huge hug. Liv smiled at the interaction fondly.

"Okay, so, guys. What's the plan?" Pope questioned, still a little skeptical that this was even the right thing to do.

"Good question. So, Sarah Cameron's coming tonight. She's gonna bring an original survey map—"
