Chapter 17: "Night night Kay"

I enter the school compound and tiptoed to the hostel building and try my best to avoid trouble.

I reach the building and enter the quiet hallway. There's someone supposed to be on night duty to watch for perpetrators but there's no one luckily.

I'm walking to my hall but my phone falls out of my purse. I bend to pick it up and when I do, I'm dragged to a corner by somebody.

"Shush" the voice tells me. I still have not recognised the person yet.

"Kayla, McKayla Peters" Mrs Johnson's sassy voice shouts through the hallway with her heels causing noise.

I now know it was Kayla that helped me out of sight from Mrs Johnson. If not, detention till further notice. "Don't make any sound" she tells me and goes to meet Mrs Johnson.

"Yes ma'am. You called me?" Kayla answers her. "Is there anyone with you? I heard a noise" she questioned.

"Nope. None that I heard of" Kayla responded. "Okay, I believe you because I know how responsible you are, Miss Peters" Mrs Johnson told her.

"Thank you" Kayla nodded in response.

"It's almost 11pm, about 10 minutes from now. So your shift would soon be over. And I'll be off. Okay?" she told her and Kayla nodded.

"But since no one is coming. Let's break the rules just a little bit, I'll go home now. Goodnight Kayla. Be sure to greet your dad for me" she smiles and walked out of the hostel building.

She gets into her car and speeds off out.

"She's gone Jasmine" Kayla informed me. "Thanks Kay" I smile at her.

"It's cool" she smiled at me. "Wait.. why aren't you at the party?" I asked her.

"I'm not a huge fan of them. Sean and Rick force me most times. Plus, my dad said immediately after the game. I should report here for my night duty" she says.

"Oh okay" I responded. "But why you back so early? Rooms are partially empty cause of that party" Kayla asked me.

I'm now drawn back to the memory of Rick's sad story and his attempt to kiss me.

"What did Rick do?" she says out of the blue. "And what makes you think he did anything?" I laugh at her good guess.

"Well, when a man loves. He's bound to do a whole lot of things. And my buddy, Rick, is obsessed with you. He's in love" Kayla smiles at me and I blush.

"He tried to kiss me" I told her. "Oh shit" she gasps.

"Yes and I ran away. Stupid right? I wasn't ready and we weren't dating so, it didn't feel right" I stutter.

"It's okay Jas. You are not obligated to kiss him if you didn't want to or you weren't ready. That's your decision to make. You're definitely not stupid" she holds my hand.

"Thanks Kay. I really needed someone to tell me that. I don't even know how I'll look at him after leaving him like that" I tell her.

"It's Rick we talking about, he'll still come around. Don't worry, you guys would eventually get through this" she tells me.

"Thanks" I tell her. "Anytime girl. I'm sure Diana is partying with Sean, that's why y'all didn't come together?" she reads minds, I swear.

"You must be a mind reader Kay. Yeah, she's enjoying herself. I'll be going now" I said.

"Sure. Goodnight Jasmine" she hugs me. "Night night Kay" I hug her back.
