At the hospital, Shawn parked in the entrance and helped her out. A nurse came out with a wheelchair and took her inside. As Shawn returned to the car to go park, he looked at where she was sitting and saw a dark spot of blood.
He entered the hospital looking for her. They already had her in a room. "Really bad cramping in my lower stomach." He caught Deborah telling the doctor.
"And what about the bleeding?" The doctor asked.
"I didn't notice until I got here."
"Okay, we are going to run some tests and do an ultrasound. In the meantime, try to relax." The doctor said, putting a hand on her shoulder and nodding at Shawn as he left the room.
"I'm sorry." She said, covering her face, mortified.
"What are you sorry about? You were in pain, I had to rush you over here. Anyone would've done the same thing." He said walking towards the bed. She looked pale and weak. "How's the pain?"
"It has subsided some. Shawn, I'm sorry about everything." She tried to grab his hand, but he pulled away fast.
"Yeah, I'm sorry too. Look, I'm going to go see my father. See you in a bit."
"You don't have to come back."
"I brought you here, I'm taking you back."
"I can find a ride back."
"De... dammit. I don't know what to call you!" He said, running his fingers through his hair. "I'll be back."
Two hours later, Shawn walked into the room and saw Deborah sleeping. He looked at the nurse. "We gave her something for the pain. It made her sleepy."
As Shawn sat down, the doctor walked in. "Sorry for the wait. The emergency room has been slammed today." As he spoke, Deborah stirred and woke up. "We have your results."
"What happened? Is it serious?" She asked, sitting up in the bed.
"Can we speak with him here?" The doctor asked, looking at Shawn.
"Yes."
"You had a miscarriage. That explains the pain and the bleeding."
"I what?"
"I take it you didn't know you were pregnant."
"No, I didn't." She said, rubbing her stomach.
"I'll leave you so you can change. I'll prescribe some medication and you can go, okay?" The doctor and nurse left the room.
Shawn looked at Deborah not knowing what to do. He got up and walked to the bed. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "I'm sorry." He said.
She looked at him and smiled. Then she started laughing covering her mouth. "I'm such a horrible person." She said as she suddenly stopped laughing and started crying. "My ex raped me. That's the reason I ran away. I didn't want to be tied down to him if for any reason I got pregnant. My father would've forced me to marry him to maintain his image. I'm so glad I lost this baby, is that wrong?"
He sat next to her and hugged her. He kissed the top of her head and rubbed her arms. "It wasn't meant to be. I'm so sorry you had to go through that."
She stopped sobbing. "It feels so good to finally say it. You know?"
"I bet. What are you going to do now? Are you going back home?"
"No, I meant it when I said I wanted to start a new life. Even if I still have to be Deborah Thompson, I still want to start fresh."
"Alright, then. Let's get you out of here and something in your stomach. I can hear your stomach rumbling."
"I haven't eaten today. I got wrapped up in the apartment and then found out if I still had a job."
"I wasn't going to fire you. Even though you lied to me. Were you afraid he would come looking for you here? That's why you gave me a false name?"
"It ran through my mind. He and my brother are close, and my brother is the one that set up the rape."
"Are you serious?"
"He's never liked me. I think it's because I killed my mom. And I'm a reminder of that."
"You didn't kill your mother. Don't say that. I'm going to be outside waiting on you, okay? Get dressed so we can get out of here."
