Shawn walked into the cabin. The lights were out. "Deborah?" He whispered.
"In here." She called from the room.
He turned on the lights and walked to the room. She was sitting in a corner with a pan on her hand. "Have you been there all day?"
"What else can I do? I know they are close. I can feel them." She got up as he took the pan out of her hands and hugged her.
She put her arms around his neck and kissed him. "I'm here now. I'm going to keep you safe." He said kissing her back.
"I'm so scared." She said as he pulled her to the kitchen table.
"I brought you dinner. You must be starving." He set the bags on the table and went and got some plates. He set the plates down and sat down.
"So, how was your day?" She asked, serving herself some food.
"Your brother and ex showed up."
She froze and looked at him. "How did that go?" She stood up and hugged herself.
"Well, they came in. They ordered some food and showed your picture around. I gave them your fake name and told them you quit a week ago and left town."
"I wonder if they believed that."
"I don't know. I asked them why they were looking for you."
"What did they say?" She asked curiously, sitting back down.
"He said your father is sick and wishes to see you."
Worry filled her face. She rubbed her arms. "What if it's true?"
"What if it's not?" He said, grabbing her hand. "Why did your friend try to warn you?"
"You're right." She smiled. "Let's eat, I'm starving."
After dinner, they cuddled on the couch watching TV. "I forgot to tell you something else. I just didn't want you to worry."
"What is it?" She said sitting up.
"I saw Nelson talking to them. I couldn't hear what he told them. He had previously asked about you and I gave him the story we agreed to."
"I wonder what he said. What if he told them to watch you? What if they followed you?"
"I thought about that. I was really careful. I wanted them to know which car I drove."
"Why? You're going to lead them here!" She said standing up.
"Relax. I have a plan. And I made sure no one followed me to the cabin."
"Nelson could've told them where you live." She crossed her arms.
He got up and walked to her. He lifted her chin with his finger so she could look at him. "The only people that know how to get here are Carl and my mom and dad. You're safe. Come here." He said, opening his arms to her.
She raised her arms and put them around his neck and received his hug. The phone rang and made her jump. He walked to the phone and answered. "Hello?"
"Hey, it's Carl."
"What's going on?"
"Who is it?" Deborah whispered as he put his hand up.
"Someone told them where she lives. They found her car. Now they are asking around town who she hangs out with. Is not going to be too long until someone slips and tells them."
"Can you open the diner tomorrow?"
"Sure, hey, they know she's here. We have to keep her safe. I don't like the looks of them."
"Thank you, Carl. I'll talk to you tomorrow." And he hung up.
"What happened, Shawn?" She asked nervously.
"They found your apartment and your car. They must know you are still here."
"I'm doomed! They are going to find me. I know it. I should just go with them. Avoid all this. They will hurt you if they know you're hiding me."
"Hey, I can take care of myself. And you're not going anywhere, okay?" He said kissing her forehead.
