Wilma stood next to her son's bed. A doctor came into the room and she quickly turned to him. "How is he, doctor? Is he going to be okay?" She asked between tears.
"It's too soon to tell. He has some swelling on his brain. We are trying to bring it down. He got really beat up. Who would do that to him?"
"Whoever it was, they will pay for it." She said and the doctor left.
"Wilma! I came as soon as I heard." July said, walking into the room and hugging Wilma. "What happened?"
"Some ruffians got into the diner and assaulted him. My poor boy." She said holding his hand.
"Things like that don't happen in this town! Is the police investigating this?"
"I think I know who did this." She whispered.
"Wilma, if you do, you have to say something! We have to bring them to justice. I can't have poor Andrew grow without a father."
"If I'm right, who did this, took a problem out of our hands."
"What are you talking about?" Wilma pulled July away from the bed and continued whispering.
"Deborah's brother came into town looking for her to take her back home and Shawn was hiding her. He kept lying to her brother saying that she had left town a couple of weeks ago. He came asking for my help. I gave them the cabin's address. I asked them not to hurt him, but I guess it was a price to pay to be rid of her. Now nothing is in your way of reconciling with him and making him take responsibility for Andrew."
"They could've killed him, Wilma!"
"But she's out of our hair."
"Good evening, ma'am." Carl said walking into the room. "Any news?"
"No, Carl. He's in a coma right now. We are just waiting for him to wake up." Wilma said to the cook. "Thank you for coming."
"I feel so guilty, ma'am. I'm always there with him when he closes up in the afternoon. But today he asked me to take a deposit to the bank, he wanted to stay behind doing some paperwork."
"It's not your fault, Carl. Don't think like that. This could've happened to you too if you would've been there."
"The police want me to go by and give a declaration. I think it was those two men looking for Miss Deborah." As he said that, the two women looked at each other.
"You shouldn't get involved in this, Carl. It happened already. He'll wake up and all this will be in the past." Wilma said.
Carl walked up to Shawn and grabbed his hand. "He was planning on taking a few days off and leaving town."
"Really? He didn't mention this to me."
"He decided today. He was taking Deborah to see her sick father. Oh, Deborah. I better go up to the cabin and let her know what happened. I tried calling her, but there was no answer up there. You two have a good night." And he left.
"He was leaving town with that tramp!" July said angrily.
"Now he's not. This Carl is going to mess everything up. I hope those three are far far away from here already."
After a few hours, Shawn started stirring on the bed. "Mom?" He whispered.
"Oh my God. Yes, son. You're awake!" She kissed his forehead.
"I'm so glad you finally woke up." July said, grabbing his hand as he smiled and squeezed it back.
"What happened to me?" He asked, trying to sit up.
"You don't remember? You got assaulted at the diner." July said.
"Did anyone else get hurt? Did they take anything?"
"No, honey, just you. You had sent Carl to the bank with the deposit." Wilma said.
"Good. How long have I been out?"
"Just since this afternoon that they brought you here." Wilma answered.
There was a knock on the door and a police officer walked in. "Shawn, so glad to see you up."
"Hey, John. Did they know who did this?"
"I was hoping you could tell me."
"I don't remember." He sat up with the help of July and Wilma.
"I have some more bad news." John said.
"What?" Wilma asked worriedly.
"Carl came to the station, he said he went up to the cabin to check it out. Someone broke in and Deborah's missing." Shawn sat there in shock for a while. July and Wilma looked at each other nervously. "Carl also thinks that whoever jumped you could be Deborah's brother and his friend. He said they have been stalking you for a couple of weeks. You should've come to me with this."
"Deborah." Shawn finally spoke. "Who is she? And what was she doing in the cabin?" He asked Wilma.
Wilma looked up at July and smiled."A waitress you hired that just gave you trouble. You don't remember her?" Wilma said.
"I don't remember hiring anyone. Why was she at the cabin though?"
"Well, your big heart felt bad about her, she was a runaway, and you offered her a place to stay." July said.
"And you were okay with that? July, we are getting married. Why would I let another woman stay in my house?" He tried getting up as the doctor came in.
"I see our patient woke up. How are you feeling?"
"Confused. Apparently, I don't remember a lot of things."
The doctor looked at Wilma and motioned for her to step outside. Outside he took out Shawn's file. "He received a big blow to the head and he might have localized amnesia. He might have lost a couple days of memories."
"I think it is more than days, doctor." She said as July walked out.
"What's going on? He still thinks we are getting married, and that was four years ago."
"He might get his memory back or he might not. We just need to help him settle back into his life. Let me know if anything else changes." The doctor said walking away.
Wilma grabbed July's hands. "We are going to take advantage of this. We are going to tell him that the wedding got postponed until you finished school and you got pregnant and had Andrew. You can now have him."
"What if he gets his memory back? Won't he be pissed?"
"We'll get to that when we have to. Now, we have a wedding to plan."
