Serge looked out the window as Roger took out his phone. "This is the worst place we've stayed so far, Roger." He mumbled.
"Next time, why don't you pay?" Roger dialed a number and put the phone to his ear.
"Hello?" James answered.
"Hey, dad. I just got here."
"Did you find her?"
"No, I said I just got here. I'm settling in. It was a long drive."
"Hurry up and find her. Bring her home, Roger."
"I will, dad." He hung up.
"How is he doing?" Serge asked, sitting on a chair.
"He doesn't want to tell me what's really wrong. But whatever it is, he wants Deborah there. Hope that should be enough to bring her back."
"If you want her back that bad, why ruin her life by marrying her to me? Because, believe me, I won't make it easy for her."
"Exactly, she killed my mom. If she hadn't been born my mom would still be here. I want her to suffer, even if it's for the rest of her life. And if you get tired of her, just hand her over to your dad. Anyway, I get what I want, my dad gets to see her and she gets to suffer."
"That's some shit. Where do you suggest we start looking?"
"I'm hungry. There was a diner a few blocks from here. We can start there." He said as they left the room.
As they walked into the diner, Shawn saw them. They sat in a booth and he walked towards them. "How can I help you, fellas?" He asked, cautiously looking at them.
"Just give us two specials, whatever they are. And two coffees." Roger said as Serge whined.
"Sure, coming up." Shawn said, turning around. But Roger's hand on his arm stopped him. "And another thing, have you seen her?" He said giving him the picture.
Shawn took the picture and looked at it. He scratched his head and gave it back. "That looks like Desiree."
"So, you know her? Where is she?" Roger said standing up.
"She worked here for some weeks, but last week she quit and left."
"She didn't say where she was going?"
"Not to me. I don't think she had any friends here anyway. She always kept to herself."
"Do you know where she was staying?" Roger asked, getting furious.
"The address she gave me was of a B&B out of town. But can't tell you if she really stayed there. Let me go get your order." And he walked away.
Roger sat back down and slammed his fist on the table. "Dammit. Damn Helga!"
"Where else do you think she would go? Does she have any family elsewhere?"
"No, we have a grandmother here, but she doesn't know that." Roger said whispering.
"What if she found her? She could've asked around for her mother's family."
Shawn came and placed the coffee cups in front of them. "Hey, what was the name that girl gave you?"
"Desiree, Desiree Carter."
"Carter? Pfft!" Serge laughed.
"That's not her name?" Shawn asked in shock. "Why are you looking for her? She did something?"
"Why do you want to know?" Roger asked suspiciously.
"Well, she still has one paycheck here. She said she would call me with her new address."
"She's my little sister. Our father is dying and wants to see her before he passes away. That is all. Here, this is my personal number." He said writing his phone number on a piece of paper. "If you hear anything from her, and I mean anything, give me a call."
"I will." Shawn said, sticking the piece of paper in his pocket and walked away.
"She doesn't know about our grandmother. She wanted to stay hidden. She used a fake name." Roger said, staring at Shawn.
"Yeah, she used Helga's maiden name."
"Excuse me?" Nelson said as he neared their table.
"Can I help you?" Roger asked, annoyed.
"Can I see that picture?" Nelson asked, pointing at Deborah's picture.
Roger handed him the picture. "You know where I can find her?"
"Spicy little thing this one. First time we met, she threw a cup of coffee on my face." He said caressing her picture.
Roger pulled it away from his hands. "Do you know something?" Serge asked.
"What did Shawn tell you?" Nelson whispered to them.
"Shawn?" Roger asked, confused.
"The dude that took your order. What did he say about her?"
"She quit a week ago and left town. Why? Do you think he's lying?"
"They were pretty chumy. I'm surprised she would leave just like that and he would let her. If she was mine, I would make sure to keep her locked up, if you know what I mean."
"Hey, that's my fiancé!" Serge said between his teeth.
"Good luck finding her." Nelson winked and left the diner.
