Everybody was now geared up, guns in their hands. The day we all waited for had slowly, yet surely arrived. The second shipment. I tightened my vest, feeling the rough fabric press against my chest and back. I turned my head, looking over at Ghost. His eyes settled on me, his dark brown eyes looked into mine. He gave me a small head nod. With a small smile on my face, I gave him a small head nod back. I could feel an elbow nudge at me, looking over my eyes meeting Gaz's. He had a smug grin on his face, signaling the so-called "feelings" between Ghost and I.
The sound of the helicopter pierced the air, a mechanical whirring that grew louder as we approached the vehicle. The chopper's rotor blades whirled overhead, creating a low, thunderous hum that reverberated in my chest. I could feel the vibrations from the helicopter's engine underneath my feet, a steady thrum that seemed to intensify as we boarded the chopper.
As we boarded the helicopter, I could feel the ground shaking beneath my feet and the air around me growing thinner. The rotor blades spun faster and faster, creating a deafening roar as the chopper rose into the sky. I could barely hear myself think over the thunderous noise as we ascended into the clouds.
Price went over the plan as he normally would, changing it slightly. He decided to fill in my spot as I stayed back alongside Ghost to snipe. I wasn't normally a sniper, but Price insisted I didn't go out in the gunfire since my stitches were so close coming out. I didn't bother protesting as I shifted my gaze out the opening of the chopper.
As I looked down from the helicopter, I could see the landscape below stretching out for miles. The dry, dusty terrain was dotted with small towns and villages, which looked like specks from this height. The sun glinted off the roofs of the buildings and the road that snaked its way across the land. It was a desolate yet somehow serene view.
The helicopter approached the drop spot, and Price went over the plan with me and Ghost, debriefing our parts on the mission. The task: to provide cover fire for our team, who would be on the ground engaging with the enemy, taking them down at a closer range.
I was usually adrenaline-fueled during missions like this, but I felt uncharacteristically nervous beside Ghost. As they took up their positions, preparing to fire, I felt my heart racing in a way that felt unfamiliar. It took me a moment to realize that what I thought was feeling was a mixture of nerves and excitement--a romantic liking I did not realize I had for Ghost.
I shook my head, freeing myself of the thoughts. "You alright Sarge?" Ghost asked me, his breathy voice catching me by surprise. Being in my head the entire time made me forget that he was here. "Yeah, I'm fine." I spoke quickly as I continued peering through the scope. I took in my surroundings, watching the Russian soldiers closely. I moved the sniper around, watching the soldiers engage in conversation, unaware of our presence.
"Now." Price's voice was as clear as day through the coms. At the end of my sniper was a suppressor, hopefully being able to take down more soldiers without them being away. I shot the soldiers between their eyes, taking down the ones that were alone.
Once Soap, Gaz, and Price ran through, taking down the soldiers- that's when they returned fire. Bullets sprayed from each side. Soap, Gaz, and Price were in cover, standing up from time to time to continue the rapid gunfire. I continued taking down soldiers that stood up from cover every now and then. The floor felt hard beneath my body and I could feel the stitches tearing at my now, irritated skin.
I ignored the discomfort. I quickly re-loaded, my mind only on the mission. Ghost continued sniping as I quickly re-loaded. Once I finished, my eye immediately peered through the scope, taking down more soldiers. "Push through!" Price ordered through the coms. Ghost and I continued covering them as they ran over to the large crate, peering inside of it.
