Author's note:

Wow, I just realized that it's Monet's birthday! I actually had no idea and posted this chapter today! What a great coincidence! Happy birthday dear Mama Baker and Monet 🤍

It had been a couple of days since Darnell returned and introduced Maï to the group, shocking everyone in the process. Darnell having a girlfriend and being engaged were two very different pieces of information and Olivia felt a bit blindsided by the group reveal.

It gave off Simone and Jordan all over again and she wasn't ready to live through that same rollercoaster.

"Hey!"

Looking up from her computer, Olivia smiled faintly at her friend. She had managed to avoid him most of the time the past few days but when he offered to stop at her school to pick her up, she couldn't find another excuse to push it away.

"Hey! Have a seat!" She exclaimed.

She scooted a bit to the left to give him enough room.

"Where's Spencer?" Darnell asked.

"His class isn't done for another twenty minutes. We can wait for him here." Olivia replied.

Darnell modestly nodded his head, not saying anything else.

"Where is Maï?" She asked, looking for a topic of conversation.

"She's in the car. I told her to wait there."

"Why? She could have waited with us."

"Yeah, well I'm trying to spare her the same glacial welcome she got from you a couple of days ago."

He responded, a hint of irritation detectable in his tone.

"I didn't... Or I didn't mean to. It was such a surprise for everyone. The last time we talked she was just your girlfriend. I was just confused, that's all."

Olivia justified, but Darnell didn't look convinced.

"You could have waited for us to be alone to say this, instead of giving her the cold shoulder."

"I know. I'm truly sorry for that and I promise you that I have nothing against Maï. She seems like a nice girl."

"She is."

Darnell replied confidently. He was beginning to warm up to her again.

"So... can I be friends with her now?" Olivia asked sheepishly.

After trying and failing miserably to hold in a snicker, Darnell let himself go and shared a laugh with her. He could not stay mad at Liv for too long.

"I guess I'll get a chance to get to know her in the car." She added.

"Yeah, yeah... How are things with Spence? I know he was having a hard time dealing with Coach's passing."

"Yeah, he was... we all took a hit. We're getting better every day." She admitted, looking away.

"Liv, you know better than anyone how Spencer gets when he's grieving. Usually, I'd not be worried about how you'll handle him, but you are affected even more directly than him this time... I just don't want you two to give up on one another again when things get hard." Darnell told her.

"It's hard sometimes, Darnell... but we're pushing through, however we can. Don't worry about us."

"If you say so then I believe it. There's no one stronger than Miss O.B." He joked.
