Chapter 34

Chess

"Unlock the door, Damian."

I didn't budge. Her father clearly said that we should fix this misunderstanding.

"Damian!"

"Stop getting mad first."

"Ano ba!"

"Galing ka sa simbahan, tapos uuwi ka sa isang simbahan," I said to her. "Tapos ang maldita mo."

Her lips pursed. For a moment the two of us drowned in silence. It seems like I hit the right spot. So just like a doctor, I pressed it where it hurts. Over the years I noticed how she avoided lying and just speak her mind. Honest to her parents about everything now. I'll be honest with her too. "Ang taas ng pride mo... Grabe. Hindi pa ba tayo magbabati?"

"Ikaw kasi eh..." she murmured. Humalukipkip siya.

Aba, pinasa pa talaga sa akin... "Bakit? Kasalanan na bang mamigay ng sapatos ngayon?"

"Hindi."

"Galit ka kasi binigyan ko ng sapatos ang kapatid mo at i-ni-spoil ko ang bunso niyo." I acknowledged the parts where she became mad. "You wanted me to stop those things because your family thinks that we have something going on again. At ayaw mo ng ganoon."

"Yes."

"Dahil hindi ako tanggap ng pamilya mo. Because they think that I'm not holy enough to be the one for you."

That's a lie. My gut tells me otherwise about her family's perception of me. I can't say in full confidence that they think positively of me. After all, I left a bad impression as Denise's boyfriend. I had to lie in order to obtain the truth in Denise's mouth.

"No."

I smiled secretly and the heavy feeling in my heart just disappeared. At least I had fewer things to think about now.

"Ano bang problema?" tanong ko. That secret smile I was hiding... lumalabas na lang ng kusa. "Just deny me. It's their fault if they won't believe."

"Anong deny?" her brow raised. "Bakit naman ako tatangi kung wala naman talaga? Ikaw kase..."

"Bakit ako na naman?" lambing ko. "Let's end this argument, please? I already acknowledged my fault, love."

She clicked her tongue. "That! That is the exact reason! Ang landi mo pa rin hanggang ngayon kaya sobrang hirap paniwalain ang parents ko na wala lang tayo."

Napahinto ako ng ilang segundo. This is funny. I feel like this also happened before.

"Anong nakakatawa?" sungit niya.

"Nothing..." I unbuckled my seatbelt and unlocked the door. "I'll walk you inside of the church. Tara na."

I opened the door for her. I tried so hard not to hold her or make any advances. And to do so, I just clasped my hands on my back. While we were walking side by side. I remember the same scenario before... we used to walk here holding hands in secret.

Hindi naman sa mismong simbahan nakatira sila Denise—more like sa likod ng simbahan. At the back extension of the church there's a wide receiving area. Used for big occasions such as weddings, thanksgiving and more.
