It had been two weeks before Dabi made an appearance. When he did show, he was a bloody mess. Chise scolded him, but all he did was smirk. She was currently giving him the silent treatment, wrapping his wounds.
"Are you going to pout forever," he grinned as she tightened the bandage.
"I might, just out of spite," she eyed him before reaching and grabbing more gauze. His free hand grabbed her face and pulled their lips together in a commanding kiss. When he decided to release her, she huffed, "Yeah yeah."
He chuckled and watched her work, "Has Hawks been tolerable?"
"Somewhat," she sighed, "He's like having a giant child around."
"I can only handle him in doses."
"Don't lie," came Hawks' voice from the hallway, "you love me."
Dabi eyed him for a moment before continuing to watch Chise work, "Why are you here?"
"Im doing what I promised," he smiled, "making sure she's taken care of."
"He means he brought food," Chise absentmindedly stated while she stitched Dabi's arm.
"Two weeks," Blue eyes met gold, "Don't be in the way."
"I won't be," he looked over his friend, "Chise let me finish. Go eat something."
Chise could pick up on their unsaid conversation and nodded, "Don't fuck it up and make me have to redo it."
Hawks waited until she was out of earshot before he sat down, "Who got a hold of you?"
"No one from your side," he gave him a knowing look, "Puzzle pieces are being put together."
"I've already put things into motion on my end," he carefully tied off the stitch, "You should know...she's fully aware you have no plans to live through this."
"Did you-"
"Nope," he glanced at him, "She's sharp. Chise knows you better than you think, Dabi."
Dabi let out a long breath, "You'll make sure..."
"I swear," he stopped and looked at Dabi. His face was stone serious, "she'll be fine."
Dabi eyed him for a moment before a smirk settled on his face. His hand reached up keeping Hawks face visible, "You have feelings for her."
The most boyish smile crossed his features, "It doesn't matter."
"Not until I'm dead," he released his face, "Don't let me down feather head."
"Never," Hawks winked.
________
Dabi was finally cleaned up, talking with Hawks while they ate, making cryptic plans. Chise watched them, studying their body language, their faces, and their words. They seemed to have two conversations at the same time. She continued her sketch: a lone, barren tree accompanied by a winter landscape. It was past sunset when Hawks departed. He would be back in a few days, needing to keep up appearances. Dabi pulled the sketchbook from her hands, "What's this one?"
"I'm not sure yet," she tilted her head and watched him, "Sometimes I dream about them, then I have to draw them."
"Chise," he tossed the sketchbook on the couch besides her, "Hawks told me. I need you to understand something-"
"You don't have to explain yourself," she sighed, "When I figured it out, I was mad at you. Then, I envied you." She shifted, tucking her legs underneath her, "You're getting to close such a painful chapter."
His voice was quiet as his eyes bore into her, "Yeah."
"It hurts. I can't help that, but, I'm happy for you," she smiled slightly, "I think you're an idiot, but I'm rooting for you."
He scoffed with a smirk and cut his eyes away from her, "Maybe you are insane."
Chise chuckled, "I might agree with you. So, in two weeks, the heroes will swoop in, whisking me away."
He nodded, "AFO is putting things together and picking up his pace." He leaned over her, taking her in, "I'll be here as long as I can."
"Okay," she looked him over, "You've been overdoing it again, haven't you?"
He rolled his eyes, "What, you gonna scold me like a child?"
She smiled a real smile, "I might, just to get under your skin a little."
"You're bold," his face was inches from hers, "Keep running your mouth."
"You like it," she pecked his lips, "So don't play cat and mouse with me."
He chuckled and sat up, "Come on, I'm tired."
Chise smiled softly and stood, "I know, lets go."
He crawled on top of her and plopped down, letting out a long breath. Her heartbeat filled his ear as her soft hand pet his hair.
"Chise."
"Hm?"
"If any of them survive...I'm sure they'll figure it out about this. Stay away from them."
She blinked open her eyes, "I will. Do you think they would try to get close to me?"
"All they care about is their bloodline," he lifted his head and looked at her, "They never have pure intentions."
"I'll keep away from them, I promise," her hand gently urged him back down against her, "Now, rest."
His hands wound into her hair, almost like he was soothing himself to sleep in playing with her strands. Soon, her breathing was even and soft. His blue eyes stared off, his mind reeling. Part of him wished he wasn't so hell bent on his revenge. They could just disappear, forever.
He smirked. Chise wouldn't let him at this point. She was sometimes more stubborn that he was. He would miss her. The way she felt beneath him, the way her green eyes looked at him, her smile and laugh, and her fiery spirit. Dabi hoped they wouldn't diminish, and that Hawks would keep an eye on her.
His mind started to slow down, signaling sleep soon coming. Chise shifted slightly, but kept her soft hold on him. Dabi nuzzled into her neck and closed his eyes, letting sleep overcome him.
Hawks laid back on the roof, staring at the stars. His heart felt heavy. Chise had been through so much in the time she and Dabi had met. Now, she was going to lose him, and be alone once more. He only hoped he hold be enough when the walls crumbled down.
