"Bro, did you get the ticket?" A voice asked from the other end of Aryia's phone.
My boyfriend was currently on the phone to Nick and the two were discussing plans for the drummer's bachelor party while I waited for the report to come back on my car which had broken down on my way to work that afternoon.
I felt bad for my student for skipping out on her piano session when she had been looking forward to it after my work hiatus, and perhaps a little worse for calling Aryia out of his song creation session with Nick over Zoom. Though as I understood, they weren't making as much music as they were plans for Nick's bachelor party which was taking place that weekend.
The LA show at The Mint had been booked for November 14th and the fans were eating it up like crazy. We had been planning it since our last trip to Boston and had done a few band practices over Zoom before coming back to Los Angeles to write more music and do some more work for some extra cash, since it wouldn't hurt to get more money in our bank accounts for merch before the performance night. But not even two days after we left, Nick wanted Aryia back in town so that he could tag along for his bachelor party.
It wasn't that I distrusted Nick. On the contrary, I thought that he was one of the most trustworthy people I had ever met, so I knew that the boys weren't going out to break the rules they had made when they had become sober – and just as importantly, the law – but I felt as if Nick could have sprung this on us when we were in Boston as opposed to a couple of days after coming back to LA. A bachelor party of course meant that there would be no girls – other than the potential girls that some of the guys hooked up with, but I knew the guys weren't like that.
The truth was, I was just reluctant to let him go because I would miss him. Sure, the rest of our friends and roommates were fun... but since we were so close, I was reluctant to let him go – even though I knew I should.
'Is this some sort of divine punishment in the form of Nick Cates?' I wondered jokingly as I listened in on their phone call.
"Swim trunks, sunscreen, hats, shirts, all the vacation shit, bro." Nick explained, listing a bunch of stuff he needed Aryia to bring with him for the trip.
"Where are we even going in the middle of September, bro?"
"Hey, you'll find out when you get here." Nick reasoned.
I decided to zone out again, and it wasn't until the garage door opened and my nostrils were met with the dark pungent smell of motor oil that I lifted my gaze and saw Evan the mechanic walk back into the room.
"So, I've checked your car Evra, and I have some news." He explained, scratching the back of his head with his blackened fingers. It didn't look like the gloves he was wearing were that helpful for his hands.
"Is it okay?" I asked, standing up.
"Well, the main issue is with your battery which is lookin' to be pretty flat."
