"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children or men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure."

"Babe, if you eat one more cookie, I'm going to hurt you." I warn Chris as I storm through the kitchen to check on the food.

Chris, laughing with guilt, backs away from the plate of Pillsbury Halloween/fall themed desserts. I think he's had six so far.

Something about those little cookies makes me so nostalgic. I probably bought the whole stock from Target but it's well worth it. I asked and asked the employees when they'd put them out and when I saw they were available online, I ran to the store to fill my cart before anyone else could.
Although, between Jack, Kailyn, and Chris, there might not be any for the party tonight.

"It smells so good in here!" Jack compliments my cooking.

I smile big and pat myself on the back. It's nice to know that my efforts are paying off. Mary has been trying to teach me how to cook ever since I first asked her last year, says I need to know how to keep the big guy "satisfied and well fed."
Of course I started with the basics: spaghetti, steak, fried chicken, homemade burgers, potato salad, baked macaroni, and so on. Chris doesn't have any complaints.

Half past one in the afternoon, I thought today would be chill until around seven when it's actually closer to the time of the party, but Jasmine had a hair-mergency and left me hanging. So basically I need to do everything.
It'd be a lot easier if I had an extra set of hands. Or three.

"Jackson, where's your sister?" I wonder while prepping a light lunch for us all.

He pops his shoulders and takes a seat beside Chris at the kitchen island.

"She didn't answer the phone, I'm getting worried." Chris speaks up, dialing her number again.

When Chris doesn't get an answer, he asks Jack how their night went.

"Mine was good, if you know what I'm saying." He slaps Chris's hands with this sleazy look on his acne-ridden face.

I roll my eyes. Men.

"What about Kailyn?" I keep him on topic.

"She met up with that kid from the pizza shop she met last time. After we went to the movies, they disappeared, so I don't know. Didn't care, didn't ask." He shrugs, ripping out a bag of Doritos to eat with the turkey and cheese sandwich I've just made for him.

Chris flails his arms when he sees Jack gets fed first and I laugh, apologizing as I get out two more slices of bread.

Two minutes don't even pass by and Kailyn's walking inside. If Duke and Stevie weren't barking, she would've tried to sneak off to the guest room upstairs.
