"It is a miracle if you can find true friends, and it is a miracle if you have enough food to eat, and it is a miracle if you get to spend your days and evenings doing whatever it is you like to do, and the holiday season — like all the other seasons — is a good time not only to tell stories of miracles, but to think about the miracles in your own life, and to be grateful for them."

Finally. I rubs my hand together and damn near giggle at the sight of the food spread across the dinner table.

What a beautiful sight.

There's even more food in the oven, on the stove, and on the round table. I'm sure I'll make two plates at a time and go back for thirds, fourths even. I haven't eaten all day besides a King's Hawaiian roll I stole when Ms.Dana wasn't looking.
I might've given her a lot of shit, but Jasmine's mother did her thing in the kitchen. Bless her. Even Kels surprised me with her cooking skills. I may swear by my mother's cooking, but Mrs.Bennett's deviled eggs don't look bad at all. Morgan's baked macaroni and cheese, though, is mouth-watering. Dana walked her through the recipe and complimented her when it was done, joking that Morgan "must have some black in her."

And the turkey. Thank God (Ms.Dana), Buddha, Allah—whoever the fuck— for the turkey!

Honestly, I could cry. After that walk JB and I just went on, my eyes are low and my stomach is empty.

With everyone in the kitchen, gathered around, I grab my plate first as the man of the house, and reach for the spoon in the macaroni.

"Ahht-ahht," Dana talks at me like I'm a child or dog. "we gon' pray over the food first."

I look at Jabari who's snickering at me and watch him bow his head, taking Jasmine's hand and Kelsey's on his right.

Praying over the food won't make it taste any better, but I shut my eyes anyway, holding hands with Morgan and Izzy.

Izzy, Morgan, and I are the only ones who aren't religious, that's apparent as I peek an eye open and catch both of them not paying attention to Dana's prayer.

Izzy rolls her eyes, I'm sure she's as hungry as I am.

"In God's name we pray. A-men." Ms.Dana concludes her prayer.

"Amen!" I say all too fast and get first in line.

Izzy is right behind me and makes me hand her a plate.

"Izzy, don't try to eat all the food." I make fun.

She sucks her teeth. "I'm eating for two, I have an excuse. What's yours?"

"Uh, I'm the owner of this house." I tell her, scooping out a hefty portion of mac to begin with.

Innocent laughter erupts and side conversations break out as everyone thanks one another for their contributions and takes a seat at the table.
