"You wanna stay for dinner?" I ask Cameron as I walk in the room.
"I don't know, your brother was giving me dirty looks when you left," he gulps uncomfortably. I laugh and sit next to him, running my hand through his soft hair.
"He won't bite."
*At dinner*
The sounds of our folks stabbing the plates echo off of the walls. Cameron's sitting across from me. My mom and brother are at the end. Collin keeps looking at Cameron and I. Cameron swallows down his food, looking uncomfortable.
"Hey Collin you know what else is cool to stare at?" I'm about to stick up my middle finger but my mom stops me. Cameron cracks a smile and Collin smacks his teeth.
"So Cameron," my mom starts once she stops chewing. "You're a junior too, right?"
"Oh, no ma'am I'm a senior." Cameron corrects.
"Oh, a college guy." Collin smirks with meat hanging out of his mouth.
"He's not in college yet, dillhole."
"Can you two please stop for 5 minutes." Our mom asks, but it's more like she's telling us. I roll my eyes and look at Cameron. He smiles and playfully kicks my foot.
"So Cameron, do you plan on going to college?"
"Mom-" She wouldn't understand why I'm cutting her off, but I feel like Cameron's being smothered.
"No it's okay," Cam lays a hand on mine and smiles. He looks back at my mom and speaks. "I planned on going to California Institute of the Arts."
"Really?" My brother interrupts. We all look at him, thrown off by his sudden interest. "What are you going to major in?" He asks, ignoring our looks.
"Acting. Yeah, I just like to make people laugh." He smiles and looks at me. I feel my cheeks burn so I look down and finish my food.
"Well that's great you have a plan, Cameron." My mom says to him. He nods but doesn't take his eyes off of me.
After dinner, Cameron and I stand at the sink, washing dishes off and putting them in the dishwasher.
"Cam, you can go. I'll finish up."
"Nah, I told my mom I'd be home around 10." He replies before kissing my cheek.
I turn around to find an empty living room. My mom went to bed early since she has to go in early tomorrow. My brother must be in the family room playing video games.
"I'm sorry about .. getting mad earlier." I say as I rinse a plate.
"It's fine Leighton," I hear him smirk. "You don't have to apologize for loving me." He puts his face close to mine, cheekily.
I laugh and push his face away. "I just .. I can't imagine you ... not ... I don't know." My words fade. I do know. I can't imagine Cameron dead. Even him saying he'd die for me makes my heart crumble in unfathomable pieces.
He kisses the temple of my forehead. "It's okay." He whispers, blowing cold breath onto my hair.
When we finish the dishes, I walk him outside to his car.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" He asks, stopping in front of his door.
I'm about to speak, but a black SUV with tinted windows drives slowly past us. I arch my eyebrows and try to see who the driver is, but it's no use. Cameron turns around and puts me behind him, poking out his chest. The car instantly speeds off, base making the ground shake. But then again, that just might be my heart pounding too loud for my body.
Once the car is down the street and around the corner, I loosen up, but Cameron doesn't.
"Who was that?" His fist are clenched and his body is hot.
"I don't know ... probably just some freaks looking for something to do." I rub Cameron's hand but he doesn't take his eyes off the ghost of where the car was. "Cam, it's okay." I step in front of him and pull his face down to me. "I'm fine, it's okay."
He looks up, then back at me before leaning down and kissing me. "Get inside, okay?"
"Cameron,"
"I'm serious, Leighton. Go. Get inside and lock the door behind you." I look behind me, then back at him.
"Fine, jeez." I mumble before walking off. He doesn't get in his car until I shut the door behind me and lock it. I watch as he sits in his car, chewing on his finger nails.
And it scares me to think he knows something I don't ...
