We're sitting in class and I can't help but stare. I mean, Jesus, he's so ... God! Him and Nash are having a conversation about I don't know what, but I pretend to be interested.
"I didn't know you came back." Nash says, giving Jack a "bro" punch.
"Yeah, my parents we're always talking about 'my house, my rules' so I wanted to get my own place." Jack explains, occasionally glancing back and forth between Nash and I.
"Wait," I pause. "You live in California by yourself?"
He laughs and, I swear, my heart flutters a little. Like a bird hitting a cage. "Well not by myself, with a couple other people. We split the rent and stuff." I nod, showing I understand, before going back to pretending to be interested. "What about you?"
My eyebrows rise, unknowingly, as I look at him. "What about me?"
"You weren't here when I was, you just come this year?" I nod. "From where?"
"Uh, Indiana." I answer, rubbing the back of my neck. He smiles as the bell rings, interrupting our conversations.
*LUNCH*
I sit across from Jack, with my head low, staring directly at the greasy and slightly burned pizza on my plate.
"I haven't missed this food." Jack complains with a smile, pushing his plate away. "So where's Cam?"
My face immediately shoots up and I find Nash and Annabelle's eyes on me. My face begins to burn as I try and control myself. But I can't help it. Did everyone know Cameron? And why does Nash keep looking at me like that?
"He got expelled." Annabelle murmurs quietly, eyes on her food.
"What, why?" You're pushing it, Jack.
Nash gives me a look. "He hit me in my eye." I state. There's no need to hide it. He was going to find out anyways. "Not on purpose." I add, clearing up all of his newfound thoughts about Cameron.
As the awkward silence begins to linger over us, I see Taylor and Carter hand in hand walking to a lunch table. Without thinking, I make a disgusted face to myself. I'm not upset they're dating, I just really don't like Carter anymore. I mean, I don't know how to feel about her. She obviously hasn't bothered to clean up our friendship since Cameron got expelled, so I guess she doesn't care anymore.
"Leighton." Jack calls out to me. I look his way with wide eyes, caught off guard. "I said are you a senior?"
"Oh, sorry." I laugh, dumbfounded. "Yeah. I mean, no. Yeah, no I'm not a senior, I'm a junior." Jack chuckles, making my cheeks burn, probably showing a bright red color.
"Hey babe, I want a smoothie, come with me?" Nash says to Annabelle. She gives me and Jack a look before smiling and dismissing herself. That leaves silence between Jack and I.
"I'm surprised they're still dating." He laughs, trying to make conversation. I laugh, too, and agree.
"I think it's cute." I say, staring at Nash and Annabelle while thinking about what it's like to be in a relationship. At least a healthy one. I turn back and see Jack's eyes on me. I giggle and ask, "What?"
He shakes his head and smiles. This time I'm not the one to blush. "You're just ... really pretty." My smile comes up a little short, and he notices. "Too soon? Did I make things awkward? I'm sorry, act like I didn't say it." He lowers his voice to a whisper level. "Just go back in time. It never happened."
I end up laughing really loud, almost attracting people's eyes. "It's okay," I tell him between giggles.
"After school, everyone's coming by my place, maybe you should come with?" He invites, cheeks died down from a red but still showing a patent pink.
"Yeah, maybe. I'll see." I smile. The bell rings and we both get up. After throwing my trash away, Jack playfully puts his arm around my neck and we walk out of the cafeteria.
I look up and see Cameron crutching his way down the hall with a yellow envelope in his hand...
Shit.
