Friday ~
I don't know why, but I'm a bit gloomy today. What Cameron did stuck with me all week. I haven't quite been myself, to be honest.
After getting out of the shower, I put on an oversized blue and green flannel, ripped light washed jeans, black and white vans, and an alien emoji crop top. I walk downstairs and find my brother still gone. He hasn't texted me to tell me otherwise, so I start to worry. Then I remember he was with his mystery girl. My mom left a note saying she'll be home later so I should order pizza tonight for Collin and I. I grab the note and throw it in the trash before taking the money. If Collin walked in and thought the money was for him, I'd be starved tonight.
When I get to school, I run into Lia. I decide to sit with her since she's by herself. She looks up and smiles when she sees me. "Hey Leighton."
"Hey Lia," I greet, sitting down across from her. "What's up? Where's Jc?"
"I wouldn't know, we broke up." I'm thrown off guard by her response. She sounded so ... unbroken when she said it. She notices my expression and laughs. "It was a while ago, Leighton, don't worry about it. I'm fine."
"Oh ... okay."
"So tell me what's up with you and Cameron." I look up at her confused. "He hasn't been here and you haven't been yourself. It's pretty obvious."
I rub the back of my neck as my head starts to burn. "He ..." I can't just tell her I wanted to have sex and he didn't. "We didn't agree on something." She doesn't say anything, so I keep talking. "It's like one minute, we'll be perfect you know? And the next minute ... the next minute he hates ..." I can't find the words to finish. I can't really say he hates me, but it is a strong pit of dislike.
"Well you know Cameron ... he's a bit bipolar."
I laugh to myself, a bitter laugh. "A bit."
"He cares about you, Leighton. He does, he just has a weird way of showing it."
I know she's right. And I hate it. Why couldn't he just show me without yelling at me every two minutes. All the mixed signals he sends makes me confused.
"I think," she starts, "if you just talk to him about that .. thing you didn't agree on, you guys will be talking again."
And that's what I do. After school, I ask to meet him for burgers. I meet him at a local burger shack a few blocks away from school. As he exits his car, the sun shines down on him. He could be mistaken for Edward Cullen the way his skin glistens. Okay, a little far fetched, but he is close to perfect.
"Hey." He mumbles when I meet him at the door.
"Hey..." There's a silence that lingers over us, smiling at the triumph of awkwardness it caused. "Hungry?" He nods with a faint smile. I only order fries and a milkshake, but he orders a meal. Once we take a seat in a booth, a flashback of when I first met him and we all went to inside out burger comes. I smile to myself, looking down at my fry. Even that reminds me of him.
"What?" Cameron asks, knocking me out of my memories. I raise my eyebrows, giving him my attention. "What are you smiling about?" He laughes, dipping a fry in ketchup.
"Do you remember .. when we first met and we all went to inside out burger?"
He smiles and nods. "And Taylor liked you?"
I arch my eyebrows, taking a fry in my mouth."Taylor did not like me."
He scuffs and laughs, sort of a sick laugh. "He did and you know it. That kid was head over heels for you." I bite the inside of my cheek. "What?"
I shake my head, closing my eyes then opening them. "Nothing."
He smirks and holds my gaze. "Leighton..."
"Yes?"
"I'm sorry."
"I know .. me too."
"But you don't have to be sorry for anything," he claims. "I do. I yelled at you and you didn't deserve that. You don't deserve that." He always repeats himself when he means something.
I lean over the table and connect my lips to his. His hands caress my face, wanting more, but I pull away. He smiles and leans forward.
"I know." I say.
