When I get home, I call Cameron and ask him to come over. My mom unexpectedly shows up about 5 minutes before he does, so we go to the family room instead of my room. I'm sitting there watching him rub his sleepy eyes and poke out his big pink lips.

"Are you okay?" I ask, running my hand through his hair.

He nods and smiles.

"Can I talk to you about something?"

"Anything," he replies and looks at me. I'm not sure what to say first. My dad called or ask about college. I decide to go down the scenic route.

"Have you thought about college?" My question throws him off guard. He thinks I'm joking at first, but when he realizes I'm serious, he stops laughing.

"Um, yeah I guess I have."

"Where are you going?"

He bites his lip and runs a stressful hand through his hair. "I was thinking California Institute of the Arts? Leighton what's this about?"

That's like an hour away. I don't know how I feel about that. At least he has goals. He's not like my father, so I don't have to worry about being like my mother and falling for a douchebag with no ambition.

I look away and bite the inside of my cheek. "Well, you never talk about it. And I .. I don't know. What if I need you? What if something happens? What if-"

"Leighton stop with the 'what ifs'. I don't care how far I am, I'm not going to leave you, okay? I'm always here for you. You know that don't you?" I nod, looking away shamefully with tears welling up in the back of my eyes. "Hey," he pulls my face to his with his finger. "I'm always here. Okay? I love you."

I smile and peck his lips softly. "Okay." I look down and bite my lip. "My dad called today."

He scrunches up his face before going back to his original expression. "You talked to him?"

"I .. I didn't know it was him. I wasn't paying attention and..." I stop and catch my breath, remembering all the things he said to me.

"What'd he say?"

I nip at the inside of my cheek. "I didn't give him a chance to talk. I cursed him out then told him to fuck off and hung up."

Cameron laughs, stroking my hair. "Good job," I laugh and feel my cheeks burn. "You think he'll call again?"

"I know he will, just from a different number."

"What are you going to do then?"

I'm not sure, to be honest. I hate him. I hate him knowing he can say two words and make me scared to death. He thinks he wins. He thinks he's a man but in reality, he's not. He's fallen short of one. Before he met my mother. Before I was born. He was never a man. And he will never be. He'll go to his grave, then see God, and God will tell him he's not a man. And that he deserves to be in hell for giving everyone else in his life exactly that.

"I'll block that one, too."

"You're just going to keep blocking him?"

"Cameron, I've been doing that my whole life."

He frowns and pushes hair back out of my face. "Well you don't have to be afraid."

"I'm not." I interject.

"I know, I'm just saying. I'm here and I'll die for you, Leighton."

"Don't say that," I mumble, looking away but failing because my face is in his hands.

"No, I mean it." He pushes. I don't reply, though. He pauses before letting me go, making me feel bad.

"Leighton," my mom calls from the kitchen. I look back at Cameron and slide my legs off of his.

"I'll be back," I say, but he doesn't respond.

I walk into the kitchen and see my mom making her homemade chicken enchiladas. Collin glares at me from the fridge, his natural habitat.

"Does Cameron want to stay for dinner?" My mother asks, tossing cheese in a pan.

I look over at Collin as he mumbles profanities while walking away.

"I can ask," I say, looking back at my mom.

"Well he's welcome to." She puts the pan in the oven and smiles when she sees me.

"Mom, can I talk to you about something?"

"Yes, baby?" Her soft voice soothes me. This is the part of my mom I like. She kind hearted and gentle part. The part that only showed when my dad wasn't around, but my friends were.

"You know what," I pause and think before asking advice on dad. "Never mind."

"Leighton what we're you going to say?" She asks as I'm walking away.

I stop and look back at her. "I love you, that's all."
