trigger warning: abuse
Mackenzie
I walked into the house and there was yelling. Back and forth.
"Dad?" I called out. The yelling stopped. "Where the hell have you been young lady?" Mom asked, walking towards me. "I was out with friends from school, why? What's wrong?" I asked.
"What's wrong?!" She yelled. "We've been trying to get a hold of you for 2 hours straight!"
"I'm sorry, what happened?" I asked. "Your brothers in the god damn hospital and we couldn't get a hold of you, that's what happened," She said. "I'm sorry Mom, I didn't know!" I said. "You didn't know huh?!" She asked. "Of course not I would've come home if I did!" I said.
"Would you?" She asked. "Or are you the reason it happened?"
"Why would I be the reason it happened?" I asked. "Just everybody calm down," Dad said. "No I won't calm down, cause from what I've heard, some god damn hoodlum did this, one that our daughter has been seen hanging around!" She screamed.
Oh god. Dally did this.
"Where is Bob?" I asked. "He's at the hospital," She said. "Then why are you both standing here yelling at me if he's in the hospital?" I asked.
"I'm going to the hospital," I said. I picked my keys back up and went towards the door but she grabbed me. "Don't walk out of this house," She said. "My brother is in the hospital, and you'd rather punish me than let me see him? For something that can't even be pinned on me for sure?" I asked.
"Yes because I know you're a little sneak," She said. "You really think we don't know you've been hanging out with greasers and lying about it all summer?"
"I-,"
"We know, Mackenzie," Dad sighed. "Fine, I have, can I go see Bob now?" I asked. "No! You got him put in the position!" She yelled. "He had it coming no matter what Mom! He's a fucking crazy person, that doesn't mean I don't love him but we all know he's insane!" I yelled. My response was a slap in the face.
"I'm going to the hospital," I said, pushing her arm off of my wrist and walking out the door. I drove to the hospital and went to the front desk.
"Bob Sheldon," I said. "Are you family?" She asked. "I'm his sister," I said. "Room 108," She said.
Once I'd found his room, there were a few policemen standing outside it. I walked into his room and a nurse was feeding him soup. "What're you doing here?" He asked quietly.
"You're my brother," I said. "I'll be back," The nurse said. I sat in the chair next to his bed and leaned back.
"What'd you tell him about me Kenz?" He asked. "What?" I asked. "Winston, what'd you tell him about me? I know you've been seein' him," He said. His face was swollen, one eye was completely shut. You wouldn't recognize him.
"I- I don't know, I didn't think anything that would make him do this," I said. "Bob I'm sorry I- I don't know what happened,"
"Nah," he said. "Nah?" I asked. "I'm a shitty brother, shitty person," He said. "I had it coming, at least someone was willing to do it for the sake of you," He said. "I would never want anybody to do this though," I said. "Look Kenz, I'm no idiot," He said.
"I hate greasers because they have the courage to do things I can't, and when I have the upper hand I take it, like it'll prove something to me, as if I'll still be better than them even if they're happier," He said. "I'm so pissed at mom and dad, they let me do whatever they want and I just wish they'd be parents, greasers stand up to people, I'm the coward who can't even tell his parents he doesn't wanna go to Yale,"
"I didn't know," I said. "They act like I'm a king because I don't stand up to them, they act like you aren't because you do, you're stronger than I am and maybe that's why I treat you like shit, you're like the greasers, something I can't be," He said.
"I'm sorry Bob," I said. "I'm not gonna press charges," He said. "Against Dally,"
"You aren't?" I asked. "I've been a shitty enough brother I don't need to take him away from you too," He said. "Thank you," I said. "But I am mad at him right now, I can't believe he did this to you," I sighed. "It's alright, don't be to pissed," He said. "If I'd known I would've been here sooner,"I said. "I know, like I said, you're the good one," He said.
"I'm not leaving, I'm gonna stay the night with you," I said. "Thank you," He said as the nurse walked back in.
