Mackenzie"Dear Mackenzie,
You have always been one of the brightest people I've ever known. The opportunity I had to be your father is one that I took for granted and deeply miss.
Your whole life I've watched you work for Harvard. All the days you pulled all nighters doing homework and studying, planning school fundraisers, bake sales, I couldn't have been more proud watching you grow up.
I know nothing will ever make up for how horrible your mother and I have been to you, but I want you to know how terribly sorry I am.
I love you so much, I hope you'll write, I want to hear all about your adventures at Harvard.
Love, Dad"
After reading the letter, I looked at the check behind it. My eyes widened at the amount of money. I wiped my tears from my cheek and took a deep breath.
I tucked it back into the envelope and put it in my back pack. Dally hobbled into my room and sat down next to me on my bed. "How ya feelin' doll?" He asked. "Like I don't wanna go anywhere without you," I said, laying my head on his shoulder. "I'll be there before you know it," He said.
"I should be here taking care of you," I said. "What if they break out of jail and hurt you again?" I asked. "They won't Kenz," He said.
"Listen to me, I ain't good with the sappy stuff and you know that, but I'm gonna work my ass off and get healed and I'll be living with you in Boston in no time," He said. "Promise?" I asked. "I promise doll," He said. "Okay," I said, kissing his cheek.
"Everything's packed in the cars," He said. "Okay," I said. "I love you Mackenzie," He said. "I love you Dallas," I said. I pulled him into a hug and he held me tight. I sniffed and he pulled away. "No," He said. "No crying, it'll be okay,"
"I don't like this," I said. "Kenz, just trust me okay? You're gonna be with Liv and Johnny and we're gonna talk everyday, I'll be there asap," He said. "I know," I said. "I'm sorry I'm being such a baby about this,"
"You aren't," He said. "It's time to go doll," He said, standing up and grabbing his crutches. "Okay," I said. I grabbed my backpack and walked out behind him.
"Well, I guess it's time for farewells," Liv said. "We'll be there to visit when we can," Darry said. "Good," I said. Two-Bit looked at me, Liv, and Johnny and started to frown. A tear rolled down his cheek and he wrapped us in a group hug. He gave us each an individual hug and let us go. "If I hug too long I'll cry more," He said. "I love ya Two," I said. Ponyboy hugged me next, then Steve. Darry hugged me tight. "Your room will be waiting for you okay?" He said. "Thank you Darrel," I said. "For everything,"
I had two goodbyes left. Sodapop and Dally.
I'd held it together so well until I looked over at a crying Sodapop. "Don't make me cry Curtis," I said. "Can't help it," He said. I felt my eyes start to burn more than before. A tear rolled down my cheek as Soda wrapped me into a hug.
After Liv and Dally, he was my best friend in the world. He was the first, well second, guy in the gang that really understood me.
"Call me as often as you can," He said. "You too," I said. "I'm gonna need someone to listen to my rants, and I wanna hear about your dates and cars okay?" I said. "Okay, deal," He said. "Don't worry little lady you're stuck with me,"
"You're the brother I never had Soda," I said. "You're the sister I never had too, so like I said, call me," He said. I smiled and pulled away, wiping tears off my face. He gave me his famous smile and everybody started to walk outside. Liv's dad agreed to drive her car down and help us move in, while Johnny and Liv rode with me in my car.
I finally turned to Dally. "I don't know if I can do it," I said. "You can," He said. "Harvard is the dream,"
"Harvards the dream," I repeated. "But so are you," I added. "You're my dream, Mackenzie," He said. "Which is why I want you to go, even if we have to wait to be together forever, I'm yours, and seeing you do this will only make me happy," He said. "I love you Dallas," I said, tears rolling down my cheek. One after another.
"I love you," He said. "Go be the annoyingly perfect person you are, savvy?"
"Savvy," I laughed through sobs. I hugged him tightly once more. "I'll see you soon," He said. He pulled out of the hug, putting both of his hands on my cheeks and pulling me into a kiss.
It was long and full of love. He never kissed me the way he was now. He truly loved me and in that moment I could feel it. He leaned his forehead on mine. "Drive safe angel," He said. "I will," I said. He walked, hopped, me out to my car and kissed me once more. Everybody waved and hollered at the car as we started to drive away. Liv grabbed my hand and held it tightly. "Harvard here we come!" She said.
"Harvard here we come," I smiled.
