tw: gang/gun violence, mentions of death
Mackenzie
Take a step.
Breathe.
One foot after another.
Breathe.
He's gonna be fine. Keep walking.
"Mackenzie," Darry said loudly. "What?" I asked. "You aren't driving, get in the passenger seat," He said. "He's gonna be fine," Sodapop added. "Just get me to the hospital please," I said quietly.
"I'll be back in an hour or two, love ya," He said he'd be back in an hour or two. It's been 6. 6 hours. I was sitting in my room with Liv having fun and he was—
Don't think like that. He's fine. He's going to be just fine. Pulling into the hospital, I got out of the car and ran inside. "Dallas Winston please," I said. "Are you family?" She asked. "I'm the closest thing to it," I said. "Name?" She asked. "Mackenzie Sheldon," I said. She looked through papers before humming. "Okay, he's in room 112," She said.
I looked from door to door, trying to find his room. The hall was blurry, my legs felt like jelly, I could hear my heart racing.
room 112
I went to walk in as a doctor was walking out. "Sorry miss, are you here for Dallas?" He asked. "Yes," I said. "Alright, you can go on in, he's slowly wakin' up but prepare yourself kid, it's pretty bad, there may be some permanent damage," He said. "Sir, do you know what happened?" I asked.
"All I know is he had some enemies, they're all in a cell now," He said. "Thank you," I said.
Walking into the room, seeing him lying there, bandages wrapped around his soft brown hair. If they didn't tell you, most people wouldn't even recognize him. His right eye was swollen
completely shut, covered in red and purple. His left cheekbone swollen and purple. His right leg was wrapped in a cast and propped up."Do you want a minute alone with him?" Sodapop whispered, putting a hand on my shoulder, causing me to jump.
"Yeah, that would be nice if you could," I said. "I'll be right outside," He replied. I walked over to his bed, sitting next to him. I put my hand in his. His finger nails had blood under them and his knuckles were bruised. I went to put my hair behind my hair and it was sticking to a wet cheek. Only then did I realize I'd been crying the entire time.
His good eye opened slightly before closing again. "Kenz that you?" He groaned. "Yeah, yeah it's me," I said. "Thank god," I whispered, kissing his hand.
"I'm sorry," He whispered. "I thought you died, whatever it is you're saying sorry for can wait until you're better," I said. "I think there's gonna be a change of plans," He said. "With what Dal?" I asked. "Boston," He said. "Screw Boston, screw everything, nothing matters outside of making sure you're okay," I said.
He groaned in pain as he tried to sit up. "No Dal, just stay there, I'll get the doctor okay?" I said. "No I'm fine," He said.
"I can't believe this is happening," He sighed. "What happened?" I asked.
Dallas (6 hours earlier)
"Hey Kenz I gotta go run some errands," I said. "Okay," She said. "I'll be back in an hour or two, love ya," I said. "Love you," She said and I walked out of the Curtis house.
I headed towards Bucks to grab some money. I was goin' to buy Kenz some flowers for getting into Harvard. I got my cash and walked over to the store. I got her milky ways and sunflowers. As I was walking back towards the house, I took a detour and got her some ice cream. Cookies and cream. Her favorite.
I've been a shitty boyfriend and she deserves more than that. I was too fucking selfish to let her go, so I gotta be better for her.
"Dallas Winston," I turned my head. "Jason," I said. "What're you doing here?" I asked. "You know how it goes," He said. "Bosses orders," He added. "What're you talking about?" I asked. "I'm sorry kid," He said. I looked behind me and 2 other guys had walked up. "Jason come on man," I said. "Just tell him you got the job done, I gotta get back to my girl,"
"You know I want to kid but if he found out I didn't get it done he'd kill me too," He said. I looked behind me and back at Jason.
There was a small gap in between the two behind me. "Come on man," I said. Jason pulled the gun out from his jeans and pointed it at me. "Don't make this harder than it has to be Dallas," He said. "Just let me take these to her first, she just got into Harvard," I said. "We can't let you say your goodbyes," A guy behind me said. I looked down at the melting ice cream cone in my hand. Before thinking, I shoved it into one of the guys hands, and kicked the other in the balls, running as fast as I could.
A gun fired and my ears started ringing. My feet didn't stop moving. I couldn't feel anything. All I could think about was getting to her before they killed me.
Another shot rang out. The ringing got louder and more high pitched. I felt my legs come out from underneath me and my head hit the ground. I reached behind me and a sticky metallic substance was on my hands. The iron smell filled my body as Jason and his guys caught up to me. A fist collided with my face once. Twice. Three times. Over and over as I could feel my vision blurring. I heard a crack and didn't know what in my body had just broken but I knew it had been bad.
I couldn't feel anything. All I could smell was blood. I could barely see what was happening when another shot fired. Another. Three more.
Body's were being pulled away from me when everything went dark.
