Three Days Later
"...which means the stakes are high for our new governor...John Dutton did say he would be taking the weekend to work from his home...Now John Dutton lives on the Yellowstone Ranch, which made news over the last few weeks due to accusations brought against it...state authorities have been investigating thoroughly since then and have not uncovered anything solidifying the claims...seems like our governor may have his first peaceful weekend since taking office...in other news-"
Oakley shut the radio off in the truck.
"Grandpa's coming home?" Tate asked from the backseat.
"I guess so, buddy," Oakley glanced in the mirror. "Maybe your dad forgot to tell us?"
"You think he'll go riding with me?" Tate smiled. "If it's warm enough?"
"You know, I bet he just might," Oakley smiled. "Would you like that?"
"Haven't seen him since he became governor," Tate shrugged.
Oakley's smile weakened, thinking how those two hadn't had time together for a while now.
"Maybe your Dad could join you two?" Oakley offered as she pulled under the Yellowstone Ranch sign. "You three could use some time together."
"Too bad Lee can't come," Tate said. "It could be a boy's ride."
"Give him a few years," Oakley giggled. "Then all of you will be off riding away from me."
"You could come too," Tate said as Oakley pulled to a stop at the main house.
Gone were the sheriff vehicles, the first time in over a week so it was noticeable. Oakley looked around and didn't see any of the guards either. Tate was right there with her, noticing it himself.
"The badges are gone," Tate mumbled.
"Yeah," Oakley said, pulling out her phone and hitting Kayce's name. "Let me call your dad."
"Hey," Kayce answered.
"Hey," Oakley said. "Tate and I are at the main house...and no one's here."
"What do you mean?" Kayce asked.
"The sheriff's cars," Oakley looked around again. "Everyone's gone."
"Alright," Kayce trailed off.
"Do you know why?" Oakley asked.
"Not a clue," Kayce said. "Let me call and see what I can find out...come up to the house."
"Okay, see you in a minute," Oakley hung up and drove up to North Camp.
She and Tate got out and walked inside. Oakley saw Kayce on the back porch, his phone pressed against his ear. Tate looked up at Oakley in question.
"Would you go check on the twins upstairs?" Oakley asked Tate.
"Will you tell me what's going on later?" Tate raised an eyebrow.
"This is not a negotiation, Tot," Oakley mimicked his eyebrow raise.
"Isn't it though?" Tate smirked.
"Fine..." Oakley sighed. "I will tell you what I can when I can, deal?"
"Deal," Tate nodded, heading up the stairs.
Oakley walked over to the back door and opened it. Kayce looked over his shoulder at her as she shut the door to keep the cool air out. She walked over to him and leaned against the railing as he kept listening.
